We know that Anderson is a progessive, prosperous county, and it seems strange to us that there should be printed in the newspapers there so many calls by merchants on their customers for settlement of accounts. In no other county in the State do we notice so many "duns" of merchants in the newspapers. Probably the newspapers there can explain it satisfactorily, but we believe it tends to injure the reputation of the county and its people abroad. ? In the line of creating new offices comes the proposition to elect two additional circuit judges, for which we can see absolutely no use. It has always been our opinion that the circuit judges must have comparatively an easy time, and certain is it that there is never any lack of applicants for the position. And we have yet to hear of any of them complaining of being over worked. Fact is, the idea of creating two new judgeships does not appear to come from the present incumbents, and no doubt it had its origin in the minds of those who would like the job. Our courts cost enough as it is, - goodness knows, and two more judges means more litigation, more sessions of court, and of course, more expenses. The legislature should kill the bill instanter if it is ever presented. A newspaper man was asked to publish an article "roasting" a citizen. "Certainly," he said to the caller, "what shall I saj' f He was furnished with an out' line"of what he wanted and wrote an ar. ticle that was a scorcher. "That's splendid," exclaimed th? friend, when the ; article was read to him, "that is right, V'v and it'll make his old hair crinkle." "All right," said the editor, "let me see, what g??:v are your initials ?" "Good heavens," said the citizen, "you are not going to sign my : l name to that?" "Why not ?" asked the editor. "I wouldn't have anyone know I had anything to do with .that for the world. "I can't afford to get into a scrap ^ with my neighbors." The editor srailel benevolently and said: "Why should I mix in a scrap that does not concern me? T Why should I assume the blame for the publication of an article to which you f ' are afraid to sign your name?" The man stopped his."paper and went away mad. |!\ Terrible Accident. Ulmeb, December 4.?On last Saturday morning, December 1st, about 8 o'clock, a most horrible accident befell Mr. Ed. Platts. While busy around Mr. J. W.
