In fact, with one or two exceptions, not a single Barnwell mer chant saw fit to use one line of news paper advertising to attract Christ mas shoppers to their stores! We feed safe in saying that that is a rec ord without a parallel in any town in the entire country that boasts of a newspaper! The burning question in just now is whether to buy buy—a fire truck. Ba rnwell or not to Automobile owners are paying about 2 , /‘i: times as much for licenses this year than in 1924, but that doesn’t mean that the highways are times as safe aft formerly. Once upon a time there was a na tion where public officials were re garded as servants of the people, not as their bosses, tired in the funds and taxes were kept at such a figure that they were not burdensome upon the citizens. A certain Barnwell merchant was complaining a few days ago about the growing tendency of people in this section to do their shopping in Augus ta and Columbia. The writer then called his attention to the fact that wide-awake merchants in those cities use columns of newspaper ’space to acquaint the buying public of the val ue of the goods that triey have to of fer, whereas advertisements of local merchants in the two Barnwell papers have been conspicuous by their ab- Why complain when city merchants who realize the Inmefits to be derived from advertising capture the trade that should he kept at home, w r hen local merchants fail or refuse to use the same means to attract buyers to their stores ?* Why complain of the increased business of the mail order houses when they present their merchandise to prospective buyers through the medium of printer’s ink?' The merchants of this section have the opportunity of talking to hun dreds of buyers each week through the columns of The People at an in significant cost compared to the re turns in increased business. Are you going to let business that belongs at home continue to go to Augusta and \ ' Columbia ? A very good New Year resolution to make is one-that-y^u will use more newspaper space during' this new year of 1925. That is the In-st and cheap est way to make this A Prosperous New Year. There were 20.919 bales of cotton ginned in Barnwell County prior to December 13, 1924, as compared with 18,920 bales to the same date in 1923, according to a recent report of the Department of Agriculture.
