r a V V --Ml # • THE BARNWELL PEOPLE at the post office at Barnwell, S. C., as second-class matter. JOHN W. HOLMES 1840-1912 B. P. DAVIES, Editor and Proprietor. TliURSDAY, MAY 22ND, 1924. Smith and the Presidency. The old idea that the South will jjo Democratic, no matter wjio is the nominee, will be knocked into a cocked hat this year if the Democratic National Convention Is so foolish as to nominate G4v. A1 Smith, of New York. The ardent advocates of Mc- Adoo have been holding up the bug-a- boo of Smith’s nomination as an al ternative in the case the Californian does not win out in New York. The People does not believe that Goy. Smith has a chance of being the nominee, and we are quite sure if, by some mishap, he should be.' that he will never be elected to the Presi dency. We do not think that the South would vote the Republican ticket if such,an event should come to pass—possibly the organization of an independent party would be the result. While we do not believe in religious prosecution, Theodore Roose velt was right when he said that the American people will never stand for a Roman Catholic as President. These United States will never be made a province of Rome. And that’s that.,^ William Henry Wallace In the death of William Henry Wal lace, for more than 30 yerfrs editor of The Newberry Observer, the people of South Carolina have sustained a % great loss. While the editor of The People did not know Mr. Wallace in timately, we had met him on a num ber of occasions and were impressed by his gentle and unassuming ways. He was a gifted writer, always a champion of the right and A defender of the oppressed. He lent dignity to his. profession and his los^s will he keenly felt throughout the State. Peace to his ashes. The editor has laid aside l^is pen and hied away to Columbia this week to attend the State Democratic Con vention and incidently help make democracy safe for the world. The fellow who occasionally re quests us to write a heated editorial on something he doesn’t like, usually concludes his request with, “But don’t mention my name.” We wonder sometimes in our idle way how the manufacturers of hair pins are faring these bobbed-hair days. There are lots of things that a nickel used to buy. Now one is lucky to get a nickel back In change. With so many other strange things happening, maybe rabbits do lay Easter eggs after all. We’ll bet nobody ever suggested “an apple a day” to Adam. WHY ADVERTISE? Twelve Reasons as to the Why of Publicity. ‘ your stove as hold his own customers as well to get new ustomers. 10.
