Vital Statistics" Law required that all births in this State SHALL be registered within ten days by the physician or midwife attending, yet a recent report from the U. S. Census bureau shows that only 81 per cent, of the births in. South Carolina are registered. There is hardly a relation of life, social, le gal or economic, in which the evi dence furnished by an accurate regis tration of birth may not .prove to be of the greatest value*, not only to the individual but also to the public at large. It is 1 not only an act of civilization to register birth certifi cates, but is good business,' for they are frequently used in many practical ways, some of which.jjre listed below: As evidence to prove the ago anl_ legitimacy of heirs. As proof of age to determine the validity of a contract entered into by nn alleged minor. As evidence.to establish age and proof ot citizenship and descent in t rder to vote. As evidence to establish the right of admission to the professions and to many public offices. As evidence of legal age to marry.
