Last week The People had some thing to say about the attitude of some business( ?) men towards ad vertising. Everybody knows about the wonderful fortunes that have been built up through the power of advertising. Of course, the article advertised had to be something that the general public wanted or needed, but without advertising it would have taken years to accomplish what was done in a few weeks or a few months. And having attained success, can an advertiser afford to quit adver tising? Well, read the following in teresting little item from The Lumber Co-operator: While riding on a train recently, William Wrigley, the famous gum manufacturer, was approached by a man who addressed him: “Pardon me, Mr. Wrigley, but do you know you’re wasting a lot of money ?” Mr. Wrigley, always anxious to learn anything about his own busi- neaa. asked in return, “How?” “Why, in advertising!” the man re plied. “Your product is so well known now you don’t need to adver tise!” "My good man,” Mr. Wnglejr an swered him. “do you know what would happen if we were to out the engine off from this train?” “The train would coast along a while and then stop, I suppose.” “Exactly.” replied Mr.. Wrigley, “and that’s just what my business would do if I cut off advertising. Ad vertising is the engine that furnishes the motive power for my business.” LARGE INCREASE SHOWN IN JAIL COMMITMENTS Total for 1921 Is I0.M9€ as Cotnpar. <d With 7..1M in 1920. The number of jail commitments during 1921 in South Carolina showed an increase of almost 48 per cent, over the jail commitments of the year before, according to statistics given out Monday by the State hoard of public welfare. Ihiring the year 1920 there were 7,386 jail commitments in the State, while during 1921 there were 10,896 commitments. The commitments to the county chaingangs show a corresponding in crease. In 1920 when the camps were visited hy a representative from the State board of public welfare the pop ulation was STfi negroes and 80 white men. In 1921 the population showed 1 240 negroes and 200 white men, a total increase of alxiut 40 per cent. The State board of public welfare attributes this alarming increase, in large part, to the economic reverses suffered by the people of the State. The number of persons arrested for violation of the prohibition law has also swelled the number of commit ments. The welfare board does not con sider this increase so serious when viewed in comparison with statistics for other years. In 191G the commit ments totaled approximately 11,743, being 7 per cent, more than for 1921. It is also interesting to note that news from Columbia is to the effect that the penitentiary is becoming more crowded every day and prison ers are coming in from different sec tions in groups. It is said that even the death house is crowded to such tfh extent that it will not hold all the prisoners under death sentence and some are kept in the main building “CINDERELLA” AT BLACKY ILLE.
