York.—Work on the' York Mecklen burg steel bridge over the CatuwLa river is proceeding slowly, according to York people who barre visited the bridge site within the past tew days. Judging from the present rate of prog- resg the structure will not b? ccmj'let- until the middle of neM fall they say, which means that there will be but little travel between the White Rose town and the Queen City by the new route this year. , Travel will continue over the Rock Hill or Greensboro routes, each of which necessitates a wide detour and make the distance to Charlotte 45 miles. The bridg^ will be the means of shortening the distance to only 29 miles. SLOW PROGRESS ON BRIDGE Structure Over Catawba .River Is Not Likely -to be Completed Until Next Fall. But even if the bridge were com pleted, there are no funds with which to improve the road from York to the river. There is an ordinary York county road—good in dry weather but bad during wet spells and it would not stand up under a heavy traffic un der unfavorable conditions. The legislative delegation was peti tioned to make a special appropria tion for the improving of this toad and its failure to do so caused some disapointment among the citizens of York and Bethel townships, which are travemed by this highway. The sol- ons, however, declare It was impos sible to make the appropriation with out Increasing the county levy and they deemed such a step unwise in the face of the business depression, men ace of the boll weevil and general pro tests over tax burdens. Although many York people were heartily in favor of building the road they real ize there Is much logic to the legisla tor*’ views and are not inclined to raise a howl over the situation. The delegation apprepriated $3,000 to build a mile and a half of new road from the bridge to connect with the nearest highway to that point — u. Order the chops cut thicker than usual, cut opt the bone and skewer and press Into shape. Sprin kle with salt and pepper. Put In a frying pan and sprinkle the top of each with dried crumbs. Pour Jn boiling water to one-half the depth of the chops, cover closely and bake in a slow oven one and one-half hours. Remove cover, sprinkle with buttered bread crumbs and hake until | the crumbs are brown. Arrange on a hot platter and garnish with celery tips. Serve with: Oatmeal Soup.—Soak over night one cupful of oatmeal In two quarts of mutton broth or water; In the morn ing bring to a boll and place In a flreless cooker until time to prepare the soup. Oook one good-sized onion, butter until delira Aly browned; add four tablespoonfuls of flour, two te»P spoonfuls of sugar, a dash of cayenne and pepper to season. Bring to a boll: add one cupful of tomato pulp and serve hot. Strain before serving, or If for the chlldseo’a luncheon, serve ■without straining. Hot Chicken Salad.—Mix one pint of cooked chicken cut In cubes, one <*upful of ctHjked peas, one-half tea spoonful of aalt. one-fourth of a teaspoonful of pepper, one tahle- spoonful of onion Juice, one pimento and ope teaspoonful of lemon Juice; set aside In a cool place for at least an hour. Make a nance, using one- fourth of s cupful of butter, the same of flour, half a teuspoonful of aalt, a cupful each of cream and chicken broth.
