It is very gratifying to me to know there is a movement on foot to beautify the Park. For two years or more it has been an eye-sore to me to see its fallen fences and unkept con« dition. I regard this Park as a mon ument to my father's memory and his energy, for in 1852 he saw each oak planted and watched over and cared for them with tender solicitude, each fall having the mistletoe (that dangerous parasite) cut from every tree. This Park was not deeded to the town as a playground, but as a rest ful retreat for tired mothers with their little tots, and we trust that suitable seats will be provided for their comfort. It was rumored by the Civic League that I "opposed even the planting of flowers in the Park" but this statement would surely not be credited by those who know my innate love for flowers. Bo I hope the women of our toWn will come to gether and by liberal donations, in money, shrubbery and plants, lend a helping hand to this worthy udertak- ing, so that Strangers visiting our town will no longer ask the question, "Have the City Fath8rs no civic pride?" Julie B. Easterling. January 17th. LONG BRANCH ITEMS. Long Brapch, Jan. 24.—Mr. and Mr*. J. S. Keel and little son, John William, visited relatives in Black- vilie last week. Mr and Mrs. E G. Birt spent Sun day at the home of Mr. Cheater Ken nedy. Mr J. B. Hair and mother, of the Calvary section, visited Mr. and Mrs. 8. J. Keel Saturday Mr. Inman Scott was a Sunday vis itor in this vicinity. Miaaes Myrtle and Lucille Keel had as their week-end guest Mias Kisaa Garrison. Mr Herman Birt and slater. Mrs. Myrtle Hutto, and daughter visited ths home of Mr. and Mrs. W P. Blume Sunday. Miaa Cohnae Turner spent the week-end with Miss Elisabeth Car- roll. Mrs. S. J. Keel and little daughter, Dorothy, accompanied by Mm. M. A. Keel, spent Sunday at the home of Mr. Linnie Jowers. Mr. J. S. Birt and daughter, Mias Banner, were the guests of Mr. and Mm. S. B. Carroll Sunday. Quite a number of young folks en joyed a party at the home of Mr. and Mm. W. H. Baxley Thursday night. Mr. J. 8. Keel and family spent Sunday with Mr. and Mm. S. J. Car- roll. Mr. Theodore Baxley was the week end visitor of Mr. Edwin Carroll. Tha quarterly meeting of the W. M. U. met with the Long Branch So ciety Saturday. Only a part of the program was carried out, as the Union adjourned to attend the fu neral of Mrs. S. H. Allsbrook. Creach. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Owens are tha parents of a fine baby daughter. Miaa Mollis Bates spent the week end with Mias ,LHah Still. Misses Fossie Still, Eulalia and Azilie Hiers and Mr. Emmett Still motored down to Friendship Sunday morning. * Miss Bessie Mae Dyches spent the week-end with Miss Juanita Bodi- ford. Messrs. David McCormack and Lawton Creech were visitors at the home of Misses Juanita and Adell Still Sunday evening. Miss Lila Rutland is spending a few days with Miss Bessie Hoge.
