It has been thoroughly borne intc the public consciousness that where large shipments are to be made year after year from a given locali ty and are to go into foreign place* that this must be done not in an in- ii^idualistic but as aco mmunity af fair and properly in a cooperative way. It is utterly impossible to be gin with, for the individual to know prices and markets. If a hundred men are shipping a commodity from one station it Would be the height of absurdity for these men' not to co-operate and appoint a business manager to do the work. A Successful Organization. As an illustration of co-operative community work I am going to tell the story of the Beaufrt Truck Grow ers Assj atnn. The foundations of ihis asociatior. v ere laid in 1915. It has recently enlarged its borders and usefulness. Its membership in cluded about 80 per cent, of the truck growers of Beaufort County, although the acreage was a little bit less than this 80 per cent. Original ly the stock was $5,000 but only $1, 000 was actually paid. It was not ne ossary to call in the remainder until 1918. On this $5,000 the stock holders have been receiving ten per cent dividends. The profits, how ever, were more than thia ten per cent. Today the Beaufort Truck Growers Association amounts to a totx' of $30,000 or more. Some in- ves ments have been in an office building. As a telephone was nec- e sary, they took ovrr the Beaufort Telenhone Company, reorganized and enlarged it and today practically ev- enr trucker in the county has a tele phone. S'wreaafully Managed. xThe average fixed charge has been four per cent. This four per cent. Moreover the profita have allowed trie association to refund 50 per cent, to shippera— thia profit accruing in apite of the fart of a ton per cent, dividend and of a big, constantly accumulating fund. It would be probably hard to Had in cooperative work a more bril liant example of good management a»d a bolter illustration, too, of the fact that an association of this kind bad a fine habitat and was badly needed in the Beaufort section. The association has had as its energetic sale* manager Mr. A IV Hare Mr. W. H. Hull has been its efficient secretary and treasurur. As one tflinks of the success of this associa tion and the Urge amount of truck that has been annually handled and of the fine profit* that accrued to all eoncemej and then turns, in his thought, as to what would have re sulted if all of the truckers of (he county had tried to do this wors in dividually—one in contrasting these methods of doing business can see the utter absurdity of trying to do community marketing on the theor em of individualism. It is generally known that the a»*oeiution, through its wise distribution of the lettuce <7op fhis past season, brought a let tuce profit increase to the county of between $75,000 and $100,000. This came because of a wise and proper distribution of this crop. Change of Policy. The Board of Directors have re cently authorized as follows: viz., that all future profits shall go not into an accumulation fund but shall be used as “service.” This means still greater efficiency work on the part of the association. New mem bers are to be added. It will allow more high priced men to work on the job. Only recently added mem bership has been made in Hampton, Colleton and Jasper Counties and this membership will be extended to Allendale and Barnwell Counties. | X The association will pile up no more “ accumulation but all surplus will go, as 1 have said, into “service;" and furthermore it will not bd a local concern.
