The action of France in promising to urge a solution satisfactory, to the American government when the ques tion of Yop comes up before the Al lied Supreme Council Is believed to have been Influenced by--intimations from this government that participa tion by America in the deliberations of the supreme council might be de pendent upon the acceptance Df re jection by the allies of the fundamen tal principles laid down by Secretary Hughes in recent note. Great Britain, it was pointed out, holds the key to the situation. If the British reply to Secretary Hughes' hole Is as sympathetic as that of France. Japan ran hardly hold ouj/ against a re-opening, of the whole question of mandates. The disease causes great losses to stock men and dairy men, but its most serious fea- — ture is its transmission to the human family through infected milk. Little children are the most susceptible. Tuberculosis exists in some of the cattle of South Carolina. Have your cows tested, eliminate tubercu losis from your herd and protect the children. Dr. E. W. McCrone, * of Blackville, Assistant State Veterina rian for Barnwell and Bamberg Coun ties, will test your herd free of charge. _ •Qia j j r ’-.L--- The Kiwanis Clubs, of which there are a good many in the country now, have as their motto: “A town that is good enough to live in is good enough to boost.” This is a good motto for anybody to use, and as there is no copyright on it we might all adopt it with prof it to ourselves and for the general' good. And why should -not a man speak well of the town in which he lives? If he cannot speak well of it. why should he live in it? \ There is a bird that befouls its own nest, but it is the lowest of all the feathered tribe. It is held in abhor rence by all other birds that fly. And most men, even if they try to conceal the fact, despise the man who knocks his home town. They know that the real trouble is not so much with the town as with the man him self. Boosting your town may not make your neighbors boost you, but it will at any rate keep them from knocking you. Washington.—Peter Augustus Day, of Rhode island, now minister to Sal vador, was nominated by President ^larding to be Minister to Rumania. Frank White, of Valley City. N. D., was nominated to be treasurer of the United States. Civic League's Annual Reception. Your Pistol. If You Have One. Two men in a neighboring city had a difficulty. One of the men habit ually carried a pistol. One night not long after the difficulty the two men passed each other on the street and accidentally brushed against each other. The man who had the pistol drew his Weapon and shot his rival dead. He was haled into court and brought to trial. He put up the p'ea of self-defense; he said he belicvfed his life was in “danger and- that he had shot to save himself. But the- fact stood ouf that he was carrying a deadly weapon, in viola tion of the law. The jury found him guilty of manslaughter and he will ha*e to serve twelve years in the pen itentiary. When he comes out, if he fives to finish his science, he will be afNqld and broken man. His useful ness will have been gone. A man cannot plead self-defense un less he comes into court with clean hands. The man who killed his neigh bor was carrying a deadly weapon, in violation of the law and so he could not under the law plead self-defense. If the slayer had not had a pistol," the two men might have had a fight and a police court case would have ended it. But the man threw bis life away for the privilege of carrying a pistol. Fairfax, May 7.—A most enjoyable event was the Civic League’s annual reception Monday evonirig, April 25, at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Young on Laurens Avenue. Punch was served «n the veranda by Misses Alma Knight, Zeile Loadholt, Mildred Loadholt and Mrs G. D. San ders. After passing down the re ceiving line the guests were permit ted to register with their left hands. From here they were conducted to the living room, where a photographic contest was- put on. Mrs.- Hugh Craddock won the prize. Many im promptu speeches were responded to, adding a great feature ..to. the occa sion. After the program was over, three dainty courses were served by Mesdames G. D. Sanders, Johnson, LoadholdL, Gray, Lightsey and Wil liams. Much credit is due to this ___ - . ......... league, with its able ojfieers and members. Have Your Cows Tested. Whom Shall We Choose? Orlando. Fla.—The body of George H. Bryant, 60 years ofd, of* this city, was found in an unmarked grave here. A pet dog which had belonged to Mr. Bryant was found buried with the body of its master.
