DAVIES, Editor and Proprietor. Subscription Rates. One Year - _._. r comed Six Months .f~ Three Months .'!> (Payable in Advance.) 7 THURSDAY,-, MAY -5TH, -1921. Mother's Day. Sunday, May 8th, will be Mother’s Day. The observance of the day was inaugurated several years ago and immediately sprang into nation-wide popularity, for the pure and simple reason that there lives not “a man (or woman) with soul so dead” that does not honor and revere the name “Mother.” Webster’s Dictionary con tents itself with the definition, “a female parent,” but God pity the child who knows no other meaning of the word! It’s true meaning cannot be defined within the covers of any, book ever written, nor accurately de dieted upon canvass by a master hand Facing death with a smile to bring her child into being, "Mother” con tinues, from the cradle to the grave, to lavish a world of love and vtende'r- ness on her boy or girl. No sacrifice is too great, ho obstacle is insur mountable, when measured against her mother4pve. Like the love of God, and second only unto it, mother- love “passeth all understanding.” Poets and writers, sculptors and painters have sung her praises from time immemorial, but none of them has ever been able to mete out to her the honor that is her due. No truly great man ever took unto himself all of the credit for his greatness*. How often have we heard the expression, “Whatever I am, I owe to my MOTHER.” Some one has rightly said, “Angels are called mothers here on earth.” _ The observance of Mother’s Dav is simple in the extreme, it's recogni tion confffsts in the wearing of a flow er in her honor—a colored one if she is living, a white one if she has been called to her reward. A spoken or written word of love and appreciation if you are still blessed with her dear companionship, a prayer for her in tercession if she has taken her place near the Great White Throne. The quarterly meeting of the 3rd Division of W.Tf. t). of the Barnwell Asso^iatidn will convene with St. John Society on Saturday, May 14th, at 11 o’clock a. m. All churches in cluded in this division are urged to send full delegations from their mis sionary societies as well as all junior organizations. Visitors cordially ivel- Mrs. Minnie Cave, Pres., 3rd Div. . Celebrates 71st Birthday. Mrs. Z. X Hutson, who Itoes a few miles from Blackviile, entertained 80 relatives and friends on Wednesday April 27th, in celelbration of her 71st milestone. A bounteous dinner was served, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The unavoidable ab sence* of •'ithree of her children was all that kept the day from being perfect in every respect. The People joins with other friends in wishing llfap. Hutson many happy returns of tne Mr. F. M. Cook Dead. Mr. F. M. Cook died at his home in Columbia at an early hour Tuesday morning, April 26th, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E. W. iughtfoot# of the. Second Baptist Church, and thg body was laid to rest in the Elmwood ceme tery in the presence of a large con ocurse of sorrowing relatives and sympathetic friends. He is survived by his wife, two sons, five daughters and four brothers, besides a host of friends to mourn his death. Thrift, Health and Beauty. A Crying Shame The People has heard considerable complaint lately from property own ers in Barnwell whose yards and flower gardens have been (and are being) damaged by stray horses, mules and cows, particularly the lat ter, Strange as it may seem to the owners of these animals, there are quite a number of people in this little Old world of ours who really take a pride in beautifying the yards of their homes, many of which have no fences eround them, either from preference or for other reasons, and, therefore, it is not always possible to bar stray animals from the premises. We know of one- home-owner who recently spent quite a tidy little sum for phnts and shrubs, only to have them irretriev ably damaged in one night by some body’s stray stock. Net long ago a- nother man. whose wife has spent con siderable lime and money in air effort to beautify thefr hornet spent an en tire Sunday morning in chasing.some body's cow from his premises. We are told by no less ap authority than a member of the pue' ent city coun cil that there is an ordinance on the nooks making the <»v.ner-of livestock punishable, by a fine keep his animals off We learn from Ibis same. gentleman that recently a Barnwell citizen re quested that a COW, which \vq* hnni.io- trig his yard, be taken into custody i nd was informed that “it’s, no rise, as the owner owes !j>12 m*\v.” We real ize that it is not always possible to prevent livestock from getting out, but liberal fines applied to and collect ed from those w..o apparently make little or no eftort to confine theirovni- • mals would do much towards breaking up the practice. •> ! "- The People will be - glad, to hear from any home-owner who has suffer ed along this Tine. ~ ir failure to of the stn ds. Spring is here with njl het fresh ness and vfewjure. Dame Mature hav ing wrought wdndrous beauty for our little town, let us, as citizens of Barn well, supplement this vfotk by dili gent town-wide effort to bringvabout a new condition of cleanliness ancFnr- der. : — Be it, therefore, proclaimed that the second Wednesday of each month be set apart for Intensive Clean^Up Activities in Circles, Yards, Streets and Alleys. Town wagons and regularly ap pointed inspectors will, in. turn, call to see you following the date named below. Bear in mind the first of these dates—MAY 11th, 1921. J. E. HARLEY, . ' y- , Mayor. - A 1 ♦ Women Form Officers’ Council. On Saturday the officers of the Home Demonstration Club met in the Demonstration office and organized an officers council with Mrs’ Claudia Kennedy, of the Pleasant Hill Club, as president, Miss Estelle Ratteree, of the San Hill Club, vice-president, and Miss Corine Turner, of the Long Branch Club, secretary. Committees were appointed. The meeting was called bjr the Home -Demonstration Agent. The council was formed for the purpose of bringing about a closer coopera tion between the agent and the club members. Slips of paper on which the name of the person and the club she represented were pinned on e*ch of the ladies as they entered the door. This made it easier to get acquainted with each other.. A few words of welcome were spoken by Miss Cave, which was fol lowed by an address by Miss Bessie Harper, District Home Demonstra tion Agent, on the vaiue and purpose of the council. Miss Estelle Ratteree spoke on what a Home Demonstration Club means to the Women of a com munity. ‘Much enthusiasm and interest were shown throughout the meeting.- Af ter the business session refreshments were served.
