Withal, he was a prudent and successful business man, leaving a handsome estate. The catholicity of his nature was illus trated in his bequests of 65,000 each to the public schools for the whites and for the negroes in Fairfax. His home, said to be worth 620,000, he willed to the people of Fairfax to be used as a public library and the bulk of his estate, after providing legacies for relatives, he left for the estab lishment of a hospital. It has been estimated at 6300,000.
