J. C. Stribling, of the Pendleton Farm
ers society for a meeting for the so
ciety in their hall March 31, for the
purpose of electing a secretary-treas
urer to fill vacancy caused by resigna
tion of H. P. Sitton, is of more than
passing interest, especially since this
is one of the oldest organizations of
its kind in America. It was founded
in 1815, and at one time had for its
president John C. Calhoun. On its
membership rolls Is found the name
of Thomas G. Clemson, uffep. with
Calhoun, took a keen interesj. in the
society, and to'the y**ar 1S*>7 read a
paper setting forth the advantages of
a college such as we bow have in

Brunson.—Notwithstanding the In
festation of Hampton county by the
boll weevil and the uncertainty ot
future prosperty In agricultural af
fairs. the town of Brunson is thriv
ing and on a plane of progress.
A new .bank building has Just been
completed by the Merchants’ and
Planters’ bank and is a visible monu*
ment to the late cashier, A. A. Rivers,
who recently passed away.
An application for a charter has
been filed wkh the secretary of state
for the reception of a cotton mill in
Brunson to cost $300,000, Much of
the stock of this enterprise has been
subscribed by local business men and
there are many inquiries for stock
coming from other parts of the state
and even out of the state. This is
due perhaps to the fact that W. D.
McNeil, well known as successful con
structor of cotton mills, is in charge
of this enterprise. Mr. McNeil comes
I to Brunson highly recommended as a
genius In thst line.
The town of Brunson Is now install
ing an electric lighting system which
will be in operation soon.
A sweet potato curing house Is
now under courge of construction and
mpleted.

Rock Hill.—Active preparations are
now being made for the opening of
the summer school at Wmthrop col
lege on June 15. to continue till July
S3, a session of six weeks. President
Johnson has about completed the fac
ulty. which will ba announced soon.
The college is hoping to make this
the best of the many sessions that
have been held here. A liberal aia
proprlation by thfe legislature will
make It possible to open with a

of courses than heretofore.
