Importation of parasites from Cuba and other tropical countries offers the most hopeful method of ridding the sugar-cane growing region of the United States of the sugar-cane moth- borer. or at least of keeping It under control and reducing the Injury from It. Damage in Three Regions. The sugar-cane moth borer In the United States is confined to three Iso lated regions, cloaely conforming to the areas of large commercial plantings of sugar enne—southern Louisiana, southern Florida, and the extreme southern tip of Texas. Throughout those regions It reduces the yield of sugar In varying measure, averaging, perhaps. at»oat 20 per rent. Thu chief damage results from the larva tunneling lengthwise through the ma ture rune, not killing It^hut Injuring It severely, retarding Its growth, and subjecting It to the fungous disease known as red rot. A mrusure of damage follows larval s(facts upnu very young plants, resulting In what lu known as tend hearts. Grazing Close With Sheep Hat Been Recommended as Effective Control Against Noxious Plant—Burn Off Affe»rted Parts. (Prepared by the United States pepart- ment of Agriculture.) . Dodder is considered by many ns one of the worst weed enemies of al falfa. The dodder seeds geminate in the ground and 'the young plants soon attach themselves to the alfalfa seedlings. As soon aa : the threadlike stem of dodder is attached firmly to the alfalfa plant the stem connecting It with , the ground withers away. Thenceforth the dodder lives entirely on the alfalfa. Special care should be exercised to avoid Introducing it in the alfalfa seed at planting time. Grazing close with sheep has been recommended ns an effective control against dodder. In the East, however, where dodder Is most abundant, sheep arc not plentiful, and It Is ilot possible for every alfalfa grower to use the grazing plan. Lee, manager of the Trl-Coubty Fair, returned from Washington, D. C., where he secured several government exhibits for the Andrews' fair this fall. Among these exhibits is that of the national agri cultural department, which will in clude a good roads display, farm building’s display, etc. Therd will also be a display of the division of forestry. r The manager also states .that he has secured exhibits from the state departments of agriculture and education. Gaffney.—Since the Sunday closing law went into effect some weeks ago in Gaffney, the law has been generally observed; but Broadus Westmoreland, who conducts a combined store and cafe, has been serving soft drinks with lunches on Sunday, in conse quence of which he has been haled be fore the mayor’s court and will be tried. Westmoreland contends that he is clearly within his lights. Georgetown.—Tobacco sales have been more and more satisfactory here, based on the better quality of weed that Is coming in ^ now.
