I \ 4M Content* 15 Fluid Orangeburg.—Robert Lide, mayor of Orangeburg, has tendered his resigna tion to take flTect as soon as his suc cessor can be named and qualifies. Mr. Lide has been mayor of Orangeburg ^a Mule more than a year and has nearly three more years of bit term. The resignation was brought about by pressing personal business. Mr. Lide has issued a long and Interesting statement relative to the needs of the city. He has done well as mayor and the people here regret to hear of his ; resignation. Autos Pay Big Revenue. Columbia.—Merchants, manufactur ers, railroads, corporations, automo bile owners and all other business oc cupations in Columbia paid the city the sum of $84.837.»3 in 1918 for the privilege of doing business last year. The rWeipt* exceeded the estimated income specified in the budget by $13.- 837.93. - Owners and operators of automo biles paid the city $13,455 for transfer licenses. The city treasurer issued 897 tags at $15 aadh. Chauffeurs* badges were issued .to 959 applicants, each man paying $1 for the metallic plate. Chester.—Federal ginners* statistics indicate that 26.233 bales of cotton were ginned In Cheater county up to December 13, as against 20,121 bales for the corresponding period last year. This year’s crop Is much lar ger than any one anticipated. Much cotton remains to be picked. It is thought this season Chester eounty will produce at least 28,000 bales which will come close to • the record crop of 30.000 bales. Defective Goods. Jesse Barnes, a planter of Abbeville /county, has been charged with peonage, was recsntly bound over for trial and will probably be tried at the February term of the court in Greenwood. Two negro children are Involved in the case. It is alleged that Barnes forcibly assumed custody of the children and put them to work on his place after their parents, who owed Barnes some money, had run awafr.
