Stat ;e of South Carolina, Executive Chamber, Columbia, S. C. (Continued from first page.) fine work. He was one of the tele phone men, He was not afraid; His Section was at the head of the column coming down the road that got so many shells. Carter is stronger and in better condition than when he joined at Camp Jackson. Nothing stops him or seemtf to worry him. He takes everything smiling, come what may. Angus Patterson is a member of the Supply Detachment with this Ba- tallion and is doing fine work. He did not go “over the top*’ with us as that was not his place, but he brought sup plies up under heavy fire and worked for days and nights passing over roads that were heavily shelled. Angus has always "been accustomed to having a big time, and you would be surprised to see how he has taken to this work. We marched back from the front to Sommcdieu on Nov. 16th and left there on the morning of the 18th and made a hike of about 150 miles to this place and reached here on the 3rd inst. I have had very few letters from Barnwell. I received, a nice long let ter from Ed Holpian a short time ago and will write to him in a few days. Show him this letter will you. When I started this letter I did not intend to write you a book, but just got started and could not find a stop ping place. Give my kindest regards to Deason and remember me to any other ffiends. Now that the war is over I am anx ious to get back iftwrie again and make another start. - 7 r Yours very truly, * James A. Willis. Major, 323rd Infantry, American Ex- peditionary Forces, A. P.
