•Swell physician IN FIGHT AT CAMBRAI Dr. Edward L. Patterson Helps, in Smashing Hindenburg Line. Mrs. James. M. Patterson, of Allen dale, has recently received a letter from her nephew, Dr. Edward L.-Pat terson, of Barnwell, in which he tells of the fighting around Cambrai. Dr. Patterson was one of a thousand phy sicians loaned to the British Govem- , ment by the United States and has been with the Fifteenth Welch Regi ment for a year and a half: “Fifteenth Welch Regiment, B. E. “F., France, October 22, 1918 “My dear Aunt: Your highly appre ciated letter was awaiting me, on my return last night from the front line trenches. We are just at present out in rest billets. - We went over after the Huns the other day and got a lot of them too, inflicting very heavy casualties on them besides. “Our division has seen a great deal of hard fighting since our offensive started. I went to see them administering to as many*as possible. Sometimes 1 would be going from house to house until 12 or 1 a. m. They say they would have starved if the U. S. A. hadn’t sent them food from the States. Also said the Ger mans pinched that, substituting some of their black bread, etc. The Ger man soldier is under fed, sallow,, hol low-cheeked, his resistance so low he dies from the slightest - wound. “Well, I must close, for I would never get through writing. I might say in the way of my own interest that I have been decorated by the British Government with military cross. Will have to go to England and appear before the King for personal congratulations. Calhoun, of Barnwell, recently wrote a letter to Mr. Z. D. Robertson, of Estill, County Agent for Hampton County, relative to the damage done by the boll weevil in that section, and suggesting that a committee from this county visit the infested territory. In reply he re ceived the following letter: “Estill, S. C., Nov. 14, 1918.—Home Bank of Barnwell, Mr. JIarry D. Cal houn, President, Barnwell, S. C.— ( Dear Sir: Your inquiry of the 14th in regard to the boll weevil received. “The weevil has done no commer cial damage here this year. He cam# here in this county in August snd at ' that time there was very little cotton that had not finished fruiting, but the new growth at the top was all des troyed in some fields. C —All local boards will discontinue physical examinations by order of Pruvnat Marshal General, but will conttama and carry to earliest possible com pletion classification of the nineteen to thirty-six and eighteen year groups. Carwile." The Local Board has finished clas sification of the 19 to 36 year group, and questionnaires were mailed , ta the 18-year olds Friday and Saturday. There are less than 500 of this -dam, so it is thought that the work of the Board will be completed at an early date. District draft boards, Gen Crowder said, have been instructed to complete all records of cases before them whidi relate entirely to the granting of oc cupational exemptions or the consid eration of appeals from local boaida on dependency claims. , All records of the exemption boards are to be preserved for future dispo sition and the classification of Urn nineteen to thirty-seven-year-old eighteen-year old groupsjs to be pleted at the earliest possible moment.
