sponded to our request for a settle
ment before the government’s recent
order as to delinquent subscribers
went into effect, we have been forced,
to drop some of our friends from our
mailing list. We trust theta their fail
ure to receive the paper will be only
temporary and that they will so miss
its weekly visits that they will soon
be numbered aniong our circle of sat
isfied readers. As we explained in
previous issues, our action in this mat
ter had nothing to do with the ques
tion of credit, but we are forced to
comply with the government’s orders.

As soon as Secretary Houston's at
tention was called to the fact that a
false rumor was being circulated in
the South to the effect that he had ex
pressed an opinion on a price for cot
ton, he immediately gave out the fol
lowing statement:
"A statement concerning cotton
price fixing appearing in a Washing-
ton paper on Saturday to the effect
that it was understood that Secre
tary Houston had expressed the opin
ion that 25 cents would be a fair price
for this year's cotton. This statement,
and any other statement that may
have been made purporting to repre
sent the views of Secretary Houston
as to a price for cotton, if any is to be

during and at the conclusion of his

The Hon. Dan. S. Henderson, of Ai
ken, was the next speaker. It is use
less to elaborate on the excellence of
his speech, as his reputation as an
orator is well known throughout this
section. His address, slong patriotic
lines, was given undivided attention

The present 50-sen piece is 80 per
cent pure and weighs 2.7 momme
<4X8255 ounce troy). The coin, there
fore. contains 0.2604 ounce of pure sil
ver and 0.0651 ounce oLcopper. At par
the money value of the coin is 24.925
cents. This corresponds to 95.7 cents
per ounce troy if the value of the cop
