The People is heartily in favor of the government taking more drastic tic measures in its treatment of spies and agents of the countries with which we are at war. We now have several hundreds of thousands of soldiers in France fighting the Raiser and his minions and we cannot afford to be too gentle in our dealings with the enemy within our gates. In his ignorance It has been difficult for him to understand tha principles for which we are fighting, yet he has never questioned the neces sity for declaring war nor the steps taken since the declaration for rais ing an army. He registered wheirhe was told to do so, he willingly submits to the physical examinatfon and, ex cept in a few isolated instances, he is prompt to obey the order of induction into military service. It would, there fore, be a manifest injustice to de prive him of any of His rights. Per haps a solution can be found by the civil authoritie* requiring every able-, bodied man and woman doing so many hours work a week. We can't afford to lose the war because those at home refuse to display the proper patriot ism. We wish once more to remind our farmer friends that unless they raise their own foodstuffs this year, they may find themselves in the same fix as the shipwrecked sailors, who were surrounded by “water, water every where and not a drop to drink.” Moif- ey, money everywhere will be worth less unless there is food to buy. Don’t let 30-cent cotton be the Kaiser's ally. Grow more foodstuffs this year than ever before in the hia- tory of the South.
