Popular Science, by the two jagged
yellowish red or reddish transverse

'Their scientific names (Necrophorus)
means no more than “bdrters of the
dead." As undertakers, the insects
have legs especially adapted for dig-

One of the saddest accidents that
ever occurred in Barnwell County. Was
the burning to death of little Coye
Diamond, the stX-year edd daughter
<>f Mr, and Mrs. M. C. Diamond who
Tive about four miles East of Barn
well. The tragedy took place about
five o’clock ’ in the afternoon when
Mrs. Diamond and her little daughter,
Coye,- went out into the back yard to
get some wood to build a fire. Little
Coye took an armful of wood and car
ried it in the house, and while build
ing a fire, her dress caught. She in
stantly ran out of the house and be
fore any one could reach her and ex
tinguish the flames; she was so thor
oughly crisp that her clothes could
scarcely be taken off. She died a few
hours later in spite of all that loving
hands could do to save her.
The funeral took place at ML Oli
vet Church, Saturday, afternoon, con
ducted by Rev. W. L. Hayes. The
entire community was saddened by
this untimely tragic death, and all the
friends and acquaintances of Mr. and
Mrs. Diamond extend their sympathy
to them in their sad bereavement.

to sweaters, mufflers and wristlets.
They report a membership of fifty-
four and state that quite a number of
others are becoming interested in the
work.
A letter from headquarters ad
dressed to all Chapters in the South-
em Division states that as a iksuH
of a number of conferences that it has
been decided that the main features
of the War Council’s Christmas plans
for soldiers and sailors will be, the
distribution of about one million
Christmas packets, and the erection
of a Red Cross Christmas tree at each
cantonment. The number allotted to
our Chapter is fifty four. We have
auxiliaries organized at Williston,
Baldoc, Blffekville, and Allendale, S.
C. At Martins, S. C., we have a very
enthusiastic worker in Mrs. C, B. El
lis, who turned fn $16.00 on Uft Sat
urday to the Red Cross fund. We are
urged to see that at least one-third of
these packets are received by the 15th
inst in order that they might be
shipped to our boys abroad. We want
EVERY BOY in the service to re
ceive s Christinas packet and not a

public cooperate with them in this
worthy cause, as hundreds of thous
ands of soldiers have been sent home
from the trenches wounded not by
bullets but by (uberculosis. In times
of peace tuberculosis has been pro
nounced The disease that kills most,
and in times of war it must be fought
doubly hard to strengthen our army.
By conserving the strength of the na
tion we hasten victory. These seals
are sold only to fight tuberculosis and
by aiding- in this worthy cause it
gives each man, woman and child in
our country a chance to do his “bit.”

The Barnwell Red Cross Chapter
needs several loads of wood to keep
the members warm while on duty in
the workroom. The People feels sure
that as soon as this need is made
