Dr. Joaiah Morae, of Columbia, Made Address Friday Evening. * - , Dr. Josiah Morse, of the faculty of the University of South Garolina, made an address in the Court House Friday evening to a small number of members of the local Red Cross Chapter. Dr. Morse came to Barnwell under the auspices of the American Red Cross Society. His address Was in the na ture of a review of the work done by the society, beginning with its humble beginning on a stricken battlefield, when a handful of merciful men and women sought to alleviate the suffer ing of the wounded, down to the pres ent day, when its membership in this country alone is numbered in the mil lions. He discussed the various phas es of the work, showing in what man ner the local chapter can best serve in the Great War that has been and is devastating the continent of Europe. Dr. Morse, who is Dean of the De partment of Philosophy at the Uni versity, is considered one of the lead ing students and lecturers in behalf of the Red Cross organization in Amer- K.a, and it is be regretted that sc. few of the member* here availed them selves of the (.pimitunity of learning how best to do their “bit." It is unofficially reported that Mes srs. H. A. Simms, R. B. Cole andV. A. Willis, who are in training at the officers' camp at FoH Oglethorpe, Ga-, have been recommended as captains. The "Bumpkin” Club was delight fully entertained on Monday evening at 61 Burr Street. After a delicious course supper was served dancing was enjoyed during the remainder of the evening. Miss Lula Falkensterffhas returned home after an extended visit to her brother, Mr. C.* E. Falkenstein,. in Ashville, N. C. The friends of the latter will be glad to learn that he is rapidly recovering hi* health. Mr. and iMrs. M. L. Middleton, of Allendale, passed through Barnwell Tuesday afternoon en route to Wrightaville Beach, N. where they will spend about two weeks.
