Kirkland, of Savannah, spent a couple of days in the city this week, the doctor having been called to Barnwell as a witness in court. There were 43,131 bales of cotton ginned in Barnwell County of the 1316 crop as compared with 36,514 bales of the 1915 crop, according to a reporf of the Department of Commerc e on March 20th. In Bamberg County, 22,215 bales were ginned in 1916 and 36,514 bales the previous year. The total for the State in 1916 was 968,- 436 bales and 1,174,213 bales in 1915. Mr. U. D. Lee, of Snelling, was a visitor here Monday. Major and Mrs. J. A. Meyer, Mr and Mrs. J. B. Kirkland and Mrs. C. T. Rountree, of Meyer’s Mill, were visitors here Saturday. The major and his good wife have planned extensive automobile tours for this Spring and Summer. Leaving home early in May, they expect to visit ^relatives and friends at points in Tennessee and Kentucky. Returning home, they will go to Charleston and, by easy stages, follow the route of the Confederate army into North Carolina during the closing days of the War Between the States, visiting the battle fields along the way.
