Greenville County was spending $85,000 annually on the up-keep of her roads. She is now spending $25,- 0O0 on up-keep, and with the $60,000 balance she is paying the interest and principal of a bond issue for perma nent roads. With a bond issue of $950,000 the county is* building about 300 miles of roads that have a smooth hard surface and can be kept in re pairs with a comparatively small out lay each year. Pt>or roads have l>een replaced with g«»od ones WITHOUT ADDITIONAL TAXES It has been the contention of The People that a big mistake is made in letting an excellent piece of road go to pieces for lack of proper attention. We spend something like $1,000 a mile in constructing a sund-clay road and by the time the chain gang re turns to that part of the county it is necessary to rebuild the road entirely. What opinion Mould one have of a manufacturer Mho bought an e\|>an- sive piece of machinery and then al- loMed it to go to pieces for lack of re pairs? let that is exactly what wc do to our roads. Last summer the road betMeen Barn well and \\ illiston mths as good as any one could Mish. but for the lack of a little attention it will Ik* necessary to rebuild it entirely in a year or two. Is that good business?, Would it not be money m the treasury to pyt that road in good shape NOW, at compara tively small cost, tl.an to wait until it is necessary to do the Mhole job over?' And Mould it not be good business judgment to Moat a bond issue for PERMANENT ROADS' and use a part of the $30,0(M) a year for main tenance and the balance to pay the principal and interest ?
