a number of friends Tuesday afternoon
in honor of Miss May Simms, whose
approaching marriage to Mr. A. D.
Oliphant, of Columbia, is un event of
interest in Barnwell. • •
Mr. H. B. Berry, of Metter, Ga.,
was in the city last week and called
very cleverly at The People office. He
states that the weekly visits of this
paper to his home are as welcome as
an American relief ship is to the Bel
gians.
Dr. R. A. Deason, who was recently
appointed post master at Barnwell,
vice Mr. C. E. Falkenstein, resigned,
took charge of the office, last week.
If the first week’s service is an jndex
of his administration, the patrons of
the Barnwell office will have no cause
for complaint. , .

probate judge.
Heads of families and males above
21 may procure the permits on affi
davit that purchase is for medicinal
purposes. No provision is made-for
beer. . No physician's prescription is
required, this being a feature of the
original DuRant bill to which ‘bbjec-
tjon was made. Common carriers and
express companies will be required to
keep the affidavits. W’ine permits
ust be for sacramental or,religious
purposes. A fee o* 10 cents will be
charged for issuing the certificate.
Provision is also made for alcohol
to be handled by wholeaale druggists

come effective within 60 days after
