HISS SANDERS ENTERTAINS. Party The first Primary.' With the returns in the first primary all in, the results show that the Anti-Blease forces had a majority of about 8,600 out of a total vote of IM^OOO. The enrollment in South Carolina totals about 161,000. Twenty-five thousand men, therefore, failed to register their choice in the first primary. Mr. Blease always polls practically his full strength on the first ballot Apathy, deadly apathy, was partly to blame for the result in the first pri mary. Lack of concerted effort on the part of the Anti-Blease forces was another factor. Lulled into a sense of false security, the opponents of Bleaseism DID NOT POLL THEIR FULL STRENGTH. Practically every vote polled for Governor Manning was an unsolicited vote. Organisation was lacking. Eighty-five to ninety per cent, of the Cooper vote is an ANTI-BLEASE vote. Mr. Cooper drew practically his FULL strength from Governor Man ning. Had the Bleasites voted for him as they said they were going to do, Mr. Cooper would have been in the second race with Blease. Being an opponent of'Bleaseism, Mr. Cooper has unqualifiedly announced his allegiance to Governor Manning and he and his leaders throughout the State are co-operating with the Manning forces in the flgnt for good gov ernment. “Have we got any chance to win?"is a question that has been asked by Manning men hundreds of times in the past week. Why, man, we’ve got VICTORY in our grasp—* Provided, EVERY ANTI-BLEASITE IN SOUTH CAROLINA GO££ TO THE POLLS AND VOTES NEXT TUESDAY! Listen: In one ward in the city of Columbia, about 10O voters failed to vote. Out of thii number, by actual count, 90 per cent of them were support ers of MANNING. Other precincts did not poll their full strength, because many of the voters were away at summer resorts. Fooled by the apparent lack of interest on the part of the Bleasites, who did their work under (over, they failed to come home to vote.. But the opponents of Bleaseism are at last aroused to the dangers con fronting them and arp flocking back to the State by the hundreds. The stay at-homes on election day are awake to the situation and unless all signs fail, Governor Manning will be returned by a handsome majority. Anti-Bleaseites, you can defeat Mr. Bleaae if YOU GO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE. Haw Thin People Obtain Strang Behurt Be . “Ijefore I took tonoline people to, call me ‘skinny,’ but now my *> changed. Now, the Coroner’s office is the on ly elective office in the. gift of the people that I feel fully capable of fill- lag. I am perfectly conversant with tte dutiea of that office and I feel a«re that the management of the of fice will be conducted in a manner ful ly creditable botji to myself and the eeonty. Now- for your very kind and flwagfctfbl consideration in placing old man fa'a'jiosltion to make an boeest living in his declining years, I thank you one and all very much. Very respectfully, Y«or hambj. Mrnp^ J. STAFF HALFORD. 8. C, Sept. 4, 1916. The Crisis. South Carolina today facet one of the greatest crisis since the days of reconstruction. The question for the voters to decide in next Tuesday’s pri mary election is whether they are going to indorse or repudiate Governor Manning’s policy of law enforcement The issue is squarely drawn and there can be no middle course. Either a majority of the voters want good govrn- ment, assuring safety to life and property; or they want a reign of lawless- nmm, wherein the just verdicts of petit juries are set at naught at the will and pleasure of one man and even the wishes of Urn people, as ex pressed at the polls, are disregarded in some instances. Th* FtapTt ~to -HcTt»trWTtm<raat^<n^T^ to-rtacuM-te records of tho -Owe opposing candidates for Governor. Our readers know the kind of MIS-GOVERNMENT we had for four yean under Mr. Blease and they know the benefits to be derived from the safe and sane administration of the affairs mt state by a man like Governor Manning. Furthermore, we do not believe that the sews papers ef the State caa change My great lumber of votes one way or the other. * What we wish to sCrOka; however, is that the Anti-Bleaseites ksve s sub stantial majority in South Carolina and that all that is necessary to snatch victory from apparent defeat ia for the adveeatee of good government to turn out In force next Tueeday and declare, emphatically, once and for all that they are oaalterably opposed to a policy of NON-LAW ENFORCE MENT. Tho gubernatorial race has ceased to be a question ef MEN—it has be come an ISSUE It is no longer Governor Manning’s fight for re-election— it is the fight ef tfcq, patriotic citizens of South Carolina for the good name of their Stats, Are yon lovars of peace and good government going to lay down your anna in the face of the enemy and calmly surrender wi’hcut the firing of s single shot? Are you going to tamely admit defeat before the battle has wall begun ? Are you going to tell the world that because a Governor dared to enforce YOUR laws he shall be denied a second term wherein to carry out the splendid policies already begun? Frankly, WE DONT BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL! Nothing worth while has ever been won without a struggle and if the Anti-Bleaseites srill go to the polls next Tuesday and VOTE, there can be no possible doubt shout the result. It is the duty of c'-sry opponent g/ Bleaseism not only to vote himself, but to see that his neighbors vote also. Let us not mince matters. South Carolina—YOUR State—is face to face with a crisis. Whether she shall pass it successfully is for YOU to say. In the name of good government. South Carolina Calls upon every loyal son to do his duty I j--. — . • , Mr. Caoper’s Friends. The People fails to see upon what grounds the Bleaseiles are claiming any part of the Cooper vote. If ever a man was double-crossed by another. Mr. Cooper was double-cfosted by Mr. Blease. All during the campaign, one heard reports from this section and that section that hundreds of Bleaseites were going to vote for Mr. Cooper for Governor. An analysis of the vote shows conclusively that such was not the case. It was all a part of the game to divide the normal Anti-Blease vote. Had the Bleaseites voted for Mr. Cooper as they said they were going to do, Mr. Manning would never have gotten in the second race. The People believfes that the frienda of Mr. Cooper reserit the way in which their candidate was treated and that they will express their resent ment in no uncertain terms in the second primary. They want Mr. Cooper to be Governor two years hence and the rotten deal handed them on August 29th proves conclusively that they can hope for nothing from the Bleaseites. It is upon this belief and information that we do not feel called upon to disclose that we claim that 86 to 90 per cent of the Cooper vote will becast AGAINST Blease in the second primary. As we pointed out several weeks ago, the Bleaseites TALKED Cooper and VOTED for Blease^ Mr. Blease polls his FULL strength in the FIRST primary ALWAYS. IN-THE DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES.
