THURSDAY, JULY 27TH., l6l6. “Gov. Manning had a colloquy at the Barnwell meeting with Dr. Patter son about the asylum. The crowd ap plauded. Therefore, Manning had the crowd and will carry Barnwell. Fine logic. The governor is not makings football of politics out of the asylum. That would be wrohg, entirely wrong.” This from the more or less esteemed Newberry Herald and New*. Brother Anil's liver is evidently out of order and we would suggest that he eat onions. In the first place, the reporter dace that because “the crowd applaud ed” a colloquy at the Barnwell meet ing “Manning had the crowd and will carry Barnwell." Practically every statement made by the Governor in regard to his most excellent adminis tration was applauded by his friends and supporters, and the applause was so general and prolonged as to leave aot the slightest doubt in the mind of aay impartial observer that Mr Man- aiAg was the favorite of the day. However, we might state to the Her aid aad News that after talking with awn from practically every section of the county we have no hesitancy what ever in saying that w* firmly believe governor Manning will carry pwall County, as he also did two with eleven candidates in | vita field ^ Another thing. The Herald and News said the colloquy was “about the asylum ” How does the Herald and News know it was about the asylum? The report sent out from Barnwell certainly did not so state. Furthermorr, the Governor is NOT making a "football of politics" out of the ^asylum. His official record has been attacked by one of the candidates and his work at the asylum being a part of that record. Mr. Manning is eartamly well within his rights in tell ing the people of the reforms he has brought about. But we might remark in passing that the asylum WAS made • “football in politics” by a former ad ministration. The People calls attention to a com munication in this issue from State Chairman John Gary Evans, appeal ing to the loyal democrats of South Carolina to_ contribute to a fund to help combat the unscrupulous cam paign against the re-election of Presi dent Wilson. The Republicans are so desperate that they are resorting to all sorts of malicious slanders and are waving “the bloody shirt” in an ef fort to stir up sectionalism. No true Democrat in the State ques tions the wisdom of re-electing Pres ident Wilson and it is up to them to help furnish the “sinews of war”— that is, money in whatever amount they feel able to contribute. A cam paign fund is being raised by popular subscription and every Democrat in the country is invited to donate his mite—anything from 26c up will be acceptable. So far Barnwell County has contributed $72.25 to this fund, but this amount could and should be greatly increased. The county pap er* of the State have been asked to help in this matter and if any read er of The People desires to help in the re-election of the greatest President the United States has ever had, just ■mid your contribution to this paper. Acknowledgement will be made through these columns and the mon- • ey forwarded to the proper authori ties. How much do yod desire the re- election of Mr. Wilson ? After the campaign here last week, • Barnwell gentleman asked a lady visitor bow her sons intended voting hi the race for Governor. She rs- rft the neighborhood-in which they are new living, because there would be auch a return, to liqnor>driiiking-aad- rowdyism that it would be unsafe for her children to even go to Sunday school. Men of Barnwell County, STOP! THINK! Is YOUR vote going to help bring about such a state of af fairs? A certain class of politicians are merely foolihg themselves if they think that their unfounded attacks on the State Board of Charities and Corrections are going to fool' the vot ers. This board was created by the legislature in 1916 upon the recom mendation of Governor Manning and was designed to make better citizns of the unfortunate criminals of South Carolina. Experience has proven that this much to be desired end can best be obtained, not by the wholesale pardoning of convicts, but by an earn est, sympathetic improvement of their condition. v Governor Manning does not claim to have put every blind tiger in South Carolina out of business; but— Governor Manning’s program of law enforcement has made the busi ness of selling whiskey in South Car olina a very precarious method of earning a livelihood. How many blind tigers are there in your neighborhood, Mr. Voter, that are working for his re-electioo? Governor Manning has not only BETTERED conditions at the State Hospital for the Insane, but he ac tually SAVED money by doing so. Would it be gratitude to turn him out of office for one less worthy, Mr. Voter? “Jimmie" Archer, of the Jasper Herald, apparently spends about two- third* of his time waiting for trains at Yapiassee. if one is to judge* from Dispatches from Berlin last wefek mentioned “British calvary mounted on horseback.” Now, honestly, did you ever hqpr of calvary mounted otherwise than on horseback? Some famous creeks: Salt- Goose—. EASY ( HAIR ETCHINGS. How Do Fairy Tale* Begin?* Once upon a time theqj^ was a can didate who admitted that he was run ning for office for what he could get out of it and that he was not brought out by hi* friends.—Jasper Herald. Oa a Par with “Piak.” For the first few innings the game went along smoothly, but the umpire called a Barnwell man safe at home plate, when he was out, and then things began to go topsy-turvy. The umpire possibly did the best he knew how, but he sure did render some rot ten decisions.—From report of the Barnwell-Bamberg game in the Bam berg County Times. Notice of Municipal Election.
