Fickling. That is an awful picture that Dr. E. C. Smith, of Bainbridge, Ga., has word- painted in this issue of The People and the editor earnestly hopes that his warning will not fall on deaf ears. The section in which he lives has al ready felt .the ravages of the boll weevil and he has had an opportunity to observe conditions at first hand. The People has been preaching the doctrine of “preparedness” against the coming of this great cotton pest for several years. That, according to Dr. Smith, il ifo* <Mbr ■•/«-guard agaipst the weevil. It is a matter of congratulation that many farmers of this section are slowly but surely awaking to the fallacy of the all-cot- ton method of farming and are, in a measure, branching out. There are few, however, who have failed to head the warning of government ex perta and are going blindly on to their ruin. ’ ' Let every farmer in Barnwell Coun ty read carefully the letter of Dr. Smith, which is given a prominent place on the front page of this issue, and then decide for himself whether or not he can afford to continue his present methods of farming with the weevil only a very few years away. Diversify! Diversify!! Diversi fy!!! ' Democrats, Enroll! The People wishes to impress upon the mind of every Democrat in Barn well County the absolute importance of enrolling in order to vote in the pri- maries this summer. In announcing my candidacy for the legislature, subject to the Democratic Primary, I wish to notify the voters that if elected two things will engage my earnest attention: First.*; The adequate pensioning of Confederate Veterans and widows of Veterans, and Second. The release of cotton grow ers from the spoliation of the New York and Liverpool speculators. I demoralized these gentlemen in 1913 and with the cooperation of other members of the Legislature I can com pletely rout them in 1917.
