MEXICAN SITUATION BAD. Rapid Spread of Anti-American Feel inf in Northern Mexico; ! Advertised Letters. Letters remaininf in the Barnwell, South Carolina Post Office and adver tised June 12, 1916. k Halo m with continued reports from consuls all over Northern Mexico tellinjr of the rapid spread of Anti-American feel- inf, the war department to-day order ed 1,500 additional refular troops to the border. To-nifht Administration officials made no attempt to disfuise their uneasiness and it was officially admitted that there is frowinf alarm over what the afitation may produce and the possibility of an attack on Gen. Pershinf’s expedition. No cause of attack on the persons of . American residents in Mexico has been reported, althoufh there have been one or two attacks on vacant consulate and other American property. Part of the increasinf apprehension here is due to the renewed raids in the Laredo region. Several reports dealing with the situation here have been received. Officials declined to reveal details, but seemed to believe a serious purpose was behind the bandit raid on the Coleman ranch. Three raiders were killed and three captured, one report said, adding that they at tempted to burn a railroad bridge near Laredo but failed. To Fill in Gaps. The new force sent to join Gen. Fun- ston's border patrol, Secretary Baker said, was to fill in gaps in the guard such as that near Laredo. It will be composed of ten companies of coast artillery and a batallion of engineers. The artillerymen will be withdrawn from fortifications between Portland, Maine, and Sandy Hook and the en gineers go from barracks in this city. The Secretary said there was no pres ent intention of calling out additional National Guard regiments for border duty. S. C. Militia to Mobolize. (oiumbm, 'June'U,—"Iir^riew of the probable calls for the mobilisation of tho RatiunjjJ. guanj.” -Governor Man- nlng this morning, before leaving for the Democratic national convention at St. Louis, issued an executive order commanding all the South Carolina in fantry companies and the division of naval miliUry to put themselves in readiness for active service. “I deem it of the utmost impor tance," said the order, “that the offi cers and enlisted men in this state be gin at once and in earnest active prep arations for increasing the strength and efficiency of the several com mands.’* While Governor Manning if silent as to the purport of his order, national guard officials here think that it is a prelude to an order from the president ordering the mobilisation of the na tional guard of the several states for service in Mexico. They are of the opinion that the mobilisation order will come shortly. Woman’s Alphabet. I will be— Amiable always. Beautiful as possible. Charitable to everybody.
