THE BARNWELL PEOPLE Entered at the post office at Barnwell, S. C., aa aecond-claaa matter. JOHN W. HOLMftS 1840-1912 v B. P. DAVIES, Editor and Proprietor. THURSDAY, APRIL 6TH, 1916. Barnwell County and Her Schools. Barnwell County has made wonder ful progress in an educational way in the past few years. Magnificent buildings of brick and stone have re placed the old frame school houses in the larger towns of the county, while comfortable and commodious build ings have been erected in many of the rural districts, replacing in many in stances lop cabins and dilapidated hovels. The patrons realized the val ue of environment as a factor in the education of their children. Several weeks a^o the trustees and teachers of the schools held a joint meeting in Barnwell and the preat interest displayed by everyone augurs well for the future welfare of ' the schools. Now comes the Field Day, uniting, the fifty-one school districts with a bond of friendly rivalry. Never be fore in the history of this bounty has there been such pn educational and social gathering as that held in this city on Friday. And it is only the beginning. Profiting by the mistakes of the initial meeting (of which there were very few) the earnest men and women tiehmd the movement will lead the people of old Barnwell County on ward and upward and in a very few years we wdl have a citizenship sec ond to none and illiteracy will be prac tically a thing of the past. A little co-operative effort is all that is needed. Let "CO-OPERATION- watchword. be the The success of Barnwell County's initial Field Day was so great that it hit the doubting Thomases a smash ing blow squarely between the eyes. The People eitends heartiest con gratulations to the leaders who so sue reoaf ally staged Barnwell County's initial Held The old-fashioned editors must all be dead No one has ramarkad that Augusts will “rise Phoemi-like fruas the The raraat cold snap certainly didn't hurt the peach crop in Barnwell Coun ty. Mfftng by the large number seen here Friday. The People challenges any county in (he Slate to show at many pretty girls as Barnwell County boasts of. And what has become of the old- fashioned man who believed that the United States could whip the world? If the price of gasoline continues to go up s gsllon-a-month law will be entirely unnecessary. Field Day has come and gone but the memory of its glories will linger for months. The best arguftimt we know of in favor of preparedness is- the Mexican invtdsni, I . . —a— All honor to Fairfax, the Hvest lit tle town in BarnwMl County!
