The Columbia State issued a 36- page twenty-fifth anniversary edi tion Friday morning’ containing a number of interesting articles from towns throughout the State, showing the growth and improvements that have come about in the past 25 years. The following appeared under a Barn well date line: Barnwell, Feb. 17.—To the person who had not visited this community in the past quarter of a century the growth of the town would be truly remarkable. Although Barnwell is one of the oldest towns in the State, it was looted liy Sherman's vandals during the War Between the Sections and the town and surrounding coun try received a blow from which it took years to recover. Its people, however, possessed the same indomi- i table spirit that characterized the en tire South during those trying years fottmring the long struggle, and the results of their labors are now becom ing apparent. Especially in the past few years has this little city made wonderful progress. The purchase of the old Carolina Midland railroad by the Southern railway and th^ coming of the Atlantic Coast Line railroad gave Barnwell excellent transportation fa cilities and added much to its material growth. • Twenty-five years ago nearly all of the business houses here were of wood, but in the last ten years they have been replaced by modem brick buildings, giving the business portion of the town a very “citified” appear ance. A couple of years ago, responding to the popular demand, the municipal authorities installed an up-to-date electric light and waterworks system, apd plans are now on foot to enlarge and improve the plant and also tq erect a splendid city hall to replace the opera house, which was destroyed by fire in October of last year. In this connection,• the city fathers pro pose to install adequate fire fighting apparatus, which will materially re duce the present high insurance rate. The growth of Barnwell has not been entirely material, wonderful as that has been, when the fact that there are no manufacturing enter- prises here to stimulate trade is taken aA. Sfc. Remarkable strides have also been taken along educational lines, one of the best equipped and handsomest school buildings of the State having been only recently completed at a cost of more than $25,000. Ifprjpyell, however, is not a “fin- i-ibefl” town, in the sense of Webster’s definition, meamg “to hr.stovv the lajjt required labor upon." There are still many needed improvements, and if the growth of the next 25 years keeps pace with the past 25.the.citizens will have a city of which they may well lx> proud. 2-Horae Steel Beam Chattanoo ga Plows 18.50 1-Horae Steel Beam Chattanoo ga Plowa $4.50 to $5.00 Repairs for Chattanooga.
