Gfubbs. Mr. Nick Coclln left for New York Monday afternoon, accompanying his father, who will sail from that port this week for hu home in Greece. Miss Louise Porter returned home from Converse College Friday night to spend the summer vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Porter. Mr. J. K. Breedin, editor of the Manning Herald and secretary of the prohibition movement in tnis State, de livered an entertaining and instructive lecture at the Barnwell Baptist Church Sunday night. At the closing exercises of the Black ville high school last week diplomas were given to the following graduates: Missej Collie Lee Bates and Willie Ruth Walker, Messrs. James Joseph Still and John Mims Walker. Mr. B. B. Easterling, the popular and progressive manager of the local branch ^of the Southern States Oil Co., has put in an auto-delivery service, by which means he will be able to quickly supply out-of-town customers. » Dr. and Mrs. R. S. Bailey attended the commencement exercises of the Fairfax High School Monday evening. Dr. Bailey delivered the certificates of scholarship and the medals to the suc cessful pupils of that excellent institu tion. The recent rains have enabled Gen eral Green to get the jump on the farm ers, who are being kept extremely busy clearing their fields of grass. In some instances it is said that the com mon sense method would be to plow up the crop and plant oyer. Treasurer an d Mrs. J. B. Armstrong and Master 'Ben Armstrong left Tues day morning, via the Atlantic Coast Line, for Richmond, Va., to attend the Confederate Reunion in that city. They expected to be joined at Wilsont N. C.| by Mr. Armstrong’s daughter, Mrs. M. J. Pate. On their return they will stop At Wilson for a short visit. On Tuesday qf last week Mrs. P. M. Buckingham with the Rev. and Mrs. A. E. Evison motored .over to Graniteville to pay a visit to Miss May Brown, form erly of Barnwell, and incidentally to get a glimpse of the good work being dbne in the Horse Creek Valley by the staff connected with St Paul’s Church at Graniteville. The staff consists of the Rev. J. Hanckel Taylor, Minister in Charge, tconess Sands, Miss May Brown, trained nurse,and Misj Luriine Philips, teacher of domestic science. Besides the regular services- of the Church the staff nrsies on an exten- live and varied round of activities in behalf of the mill people of the Valley. The examination for the award of va cant scholarships in Winthrop College and for the admission of new students will be held at the County Court House on Friday, July 2, at 9 a. m. Appli cants must not be less than sixteen years of age. When Scholarships are vacant after July 2 they will be award ed to thoae making the highest average at this examinstion, provided they meet the conditions governing the award. Applicants for Scholarships should wnte to President Johnson before the examination for Scholarship examina tion blanks. Scholarships are worth 1100 and free tuition.
