Have you taken time to look about you lately and notice the large amount of bulldiag that la being done in Barn* well? , Why, we are growing ae fast that the coming of night does not stop the sound of hammer and saw. " Ever notice the quickness and avidi ty with which chronic newspaper ab- useni grab the latest "war extra" in their desire for news from the front? And yet "they say” one can’t believe a thing the paphrs print nowadays. Lost, Strayed or Stolen—One per fectly good good committee appointed at the Boosters’ Meeting to report on the advisablity of a horse show. Any information will be greatly appreciated. THURSDAY APRIL SO, 1914. “Suppose a school physician were opposed by a man in politics, and that man’s daughter—a 14-year-old girl— was examined by him; he could not only deprive her of an education, but damn her for life simply saying. . . “If I had a daughter and a school doctor were to attempt to examine her without my consent, I would kill him. If a citizen of Spartanburg were to shoot down a school doctor who ex amined his child when he objected to it, and if that citizen were convicted and sentenced, I would telegraph Irim a pardon as fast as lightning could carry it.” The above words are said to' be part of Governor Blease’s speech at Spar tanburg last week, quoted from memo ry by a gentleman in the audience. If the governor has been correctly quoted —and the above is certainly not from a newspaper reporter’s notes—it makes him out an advocate of coljl-blooded murder. More than that he places a premium on murder. Medical inspection of school children has been tried out pretty thoroughly in Spartanburg and the results have beetf excellent. Nothing in the examination, it is said, is indelicate or cause suffici ent for a school doctor to be shot dpwn In the performance of his duty, For the good name of the State, let us hope that the governor was misquoted. If “distance lends enchantment” we venture the opinion that not even a corporal’s guard-of “jingoes” will en list against Mexico. They perfer the view from this side of the Rio Grand. A man remarked last week that the newspapers are the only ones to make any money out of the Mexican situa tion. Well, give the poor devils a chance occasionally. We suppose the government at Wash ington would have us beheve that the little affair with Mexico is only an ex change of pleasantries between two countries. The Kaiser disapproves of our Mexi can policy, but a number of Democrat ic clubs in this State have endorsed President Wilson, so why should he worry? Now’s the time for Teddy to get away from Armageddon if he ever expects to “come back.” He got his political start in the Spanish-American war. Reports from over the State indicate that anti-administration men will con trol the State Convention. Who forced this jfsue, anyway? Editor James H. Moore, of the Col umbia Record, was arrested last week on a warrant charging him with libel against Cole. L. Blease. The alleged libel was contained in two editorials which appeared in the The Record re cently. Mr. Moore was immediately released from custody under a bond of 16,000. . Little, if any, importance is attached to the proceedings thus instituted, many taking it as a play to the galleries on the part of the Governor in his attempt to muzzle the press of South Carolina. In an editorial written after his arrest Mr. Moore ridiculed the ridiculed the action and made his posi- tion clear in no unceriain terms. The Governor is admitteely one of the shrewdest politicians in the State, but he must realize that he is getting into sore straits when he adopts such methods, the old cry of persecution. He has lost hundreds of votes in the past tew months and his seat in the United States Senate is not nearly as assured as it was a year ago. The hand writing is on fee wall. It is Governor Blease’s intention to secure, if possible, control of the State Convention. He has said so in a cir cular letter addressed to his friends in many parts of the State, and published, we believe, in some papers. The State is facing a crisis and it behooves thd people to keep level heads and send delegates who will fight for principles and not partisanship. Don’t be any naan’s man. "To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night fee -day: thou canst not then be false to any President Wilson has been so watch ful in his waiting that the shipment of ammunition f^m Germany did not get by him. The shipment of eight hundred cof fins to Mexico has a very funeral look, Maker's Sale.
