A negro woman living on the planta tion of Mr. W. G. Simms died last week from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy, following burns received while throw ing chips on a fire, from which her clothing was ignited. “You give us a paper that you need not be ashamed of, but to the contrary one that you may well be proud of for the stand it takes in the newspaper world,” writes Col. T. J. Counts, of ^Bamberg, in renewing his subscription. He is now in his 87th year and has long been a reader of this paper. Willie Coleman, and Goley Austin, negroes, -of Elko, were raided by Sheriff Morris Sunday and two pints and two half-pints of corn and gin taken from their premises. While the arrest was being made, a negro man, whose name is not known, attempted to draw his pistol. E_ Thompson. Monday, February 2nd, which date was the 89th anniversary of her birth, the remains of Mrs. A. E. Thomp son were Ikid to rest in the Blackville cemetery in thf presence of numerous relatives and friends, the Rev. A. E. Eyison officiating. Mrs. Thompson was for many years a residentof Barnwell county, but of late years had made her home in Colum bia, where she passed away. Work has been commenced' ®n the handsome' cottages being erected / by Mrs. Lizzie Rhodes on her property on Hagood Street. They will' be com-, pleted as rapidly as possible, all of (them having been seated before a nail was driven. '. j—i ' '/ Mr*. S. V. Maynard. . Mrs. S. V. Maynard, aged 73 years, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. R. W. Riley, on Marlboro Avenue, last Wednesday afternoon, after an illness of three years. The weary body of this good woman was laid to rest the following day in the BaptistChurchyard, the Rev. W. L- Hayes conducting the funeral services in the presence of a large number of sorrowing- relative* and sympathetic friends. Mrs. Maynard was a sister of the late Capt. J. JV. Woodward. She was a consecrated Christian woman -who en deared herself to everyone by her .kindly traits of character. The sympa thy of the entirq community goes out to the bereaved family in their hour of grief. The People is now going into more hemes than ever before in its history.
