Marlboro county this year made one hundred dollars worth of cotton for Virery man, woman and child in the county. We challenge another county to show a like record.—Pee Dee Ad vocate. We accept the challenge and can even do a little better than a 1100 aver age. According to statistics issued by the Department of Commerce on Janu ary 1st, 66,446 bales of cotton of 500 pbunds each had, been ginned tn Barn well County. The census of 1910 gives this county a population of 34,209. This divided into 56,446 gives us 1.62, the average number of bales to each man, woman and child. We do not know at what price our contemporary figured his cotton, but taking 12 l-Z' cents a pound as an ^average on each 500 pound bale, every man, woman and child m this county made 1101.25 worth of cotton in 1913. Now, there are 9,561 white people in the county, only 2;399 of whom are of voting age. Furthehnore, Marlboro boasts long and loud of her superior cotton lands, which bring, in some in stances, many times the price of Barn- wall County lands. You wiH have tofig- Last week we quoted the opinion 'of Aristotle on the subject of Gambling. Below we give the substance of a re markable mandate'somewhat recently set forth by. the President, of China. Next Week we will set forth what the Koran (the. Mohammedan Bible) has to say; and all with the intent to show that the disapprobation of Gamb ling is nOt restricted to a few supersen sitive persons, put that the practice is universally recognized to be reprehen sible. ‘ The recent Chinese mandate read as follows: -, “Gambling is an extremely harmful pursuit. By it time is wasted, business is impeded, families are ruined and, what is worse still, the minds of those persons who indulge in it are weaken ed. Its deletious influence undermines all virtues aud breeds corruptioa. I , am amazed to find that at present (his baneful habit hasafootteg in the offi cial c ire lea as well as amidst the people* This practice , was started during the last years of the Ching Dynasty, when the Manchu aristocrats and high offi cials threw off all restraint Trie ex ample set by those in high stations was followed by th " find it hard to awa; the people, and to-day we ‘ make the people break ray from this pernicious pursuit ^ "Hearn that many officials are still addicted to this evil habit. Are they not aware of the heavy responsibilities de volving upon their shoulders? Anew nation has just been founded and the vast amount of constructive work of this new nation requires all the enengy her officials can give. After office may l the endeavor to advance one’s knowl edge and cultivate virtue." We learn that "Insthictions are given the police for the arrest of all offenders no matter what posts they hold, and to confiscate the money with which they gamble, to be used te-rewardthe polio and gendarmerie." Edgefield is a grand old county, rich in traditions, the native county of many illustrious Carolinians, but that fact should not exempt her delinquent taxpayers from the penalty provided by law. A controversy has arisen between the Comptroller General and N. B. Hazel, auditor of Saluda Connty, as to whether or not delinquents in Saluda should be made to pay the penalty, when it has been shownTrom the rec ords that no penalty has been added to Edgpfieto within the past few years, txcepi on executios. Barnwell is a grand old county, is rich in traditions and has given many illustrious sons to the State. So have other counties. But penalises are add ed and collected in this county. There should be no discrimination.' If the officers of Edgefield have been derelict to the performance of their duty, they or their bondsmen should be held responsible for the full amount of the unpaid penalties. "What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the ganden" Make Edgefield pay. With one breath the Allendale Herald *■ exclains: "With beautiful wide streets, handsome residences, health unsuri passed and numerous other advantages we do not wonder that this is a most desirable place to live in!” In the next it whispers: "There is a lot of criti cism about the dirty appearance of the streets,” etc. Moral: Move to Barn well. 1,335,151.65 None ■ HnRHSBJgBj ,i : u 1913 .r of Growth Barnwell Branch ■r.
