A. PORTER. Barnwell. S. C. Dr JOHN M. SMITH DEAD. B«loved Physician of Wilhston Passod Away Last Thursday. The many Barnwell friends of Dr. J. M. Smith were sincerely grieved to hear of his death in Williston last Thursday morning at (J o'clock, after several weeks’ illness, in the BiKh year of his age. He was a graduate of the South Carolina Medical College and for the past forty five years had practiced his profession in and around Williston. When war was declared between the Stales he enlisted in Comany H, 2nd Soith Carolina artillery, and served throughout the four years of that bit ter struggle. At the close of the war he returned to Williston and resumed the practice of medicine. “Dr. John,” as he was familiarly knowh by his wide circle of friends, was a man large of heart and many acts of charity were done by him of which the world knows nothing. Perhaps no other one man in the county will be more greatly missed. In addition to his profession he took a deep interest in farming and acquired consider able holdings of real estate. Dr. Smith married Miss Laura Weath- ersbee, who died a few years ago, and the surviving children of this union are Dr K. C Smith, of Bainbndge, Ga , Dr. J Lewis Smith and Mrs Q. A Kennedy, at w hose home he died, of Williston The body was tenderly laid to rest Friday in the presence of a large con course of sorrowing relatives and fnends As a mark of esteem in HARMONY LODOI SO 17 A.
