Afurder, sacrilege, robbery and dis- graceful living are some of the chkrge* which four monks have br6en called upon to answer at Petslkov, Poland, where an extraordinary trial $• in progress. The prisoners are: Jokers, DAmaxy, Macoch, Basil Qle- ■Inakl, and laador Starezewskl, and With them in the (lock appeared a former telephone girl named Helena Macoch, whose husband is alleged to have been murdered by Father Dam-' W. He was head of the famous converit at Czenstochowa, between Warsaw and Vienna, where a much-venerated Image of the virgin attracted a quar ter of a million pilgrims annually. This image of the virgin was studded with priceless Jewels, and It Is said that the monks substituted Imita tions for the real gems. To prevent discovery of this crime, Father Dama- *y confessed to having murdered Vac- lac Macoch, his cousin, who might have betrayed the plot. The first trace of the crime waa the discovery near the convent of .» lady'a small bag, which had evidently been lost, containing acme of the stolon Jewels. Subsequently, a sofa imh a * man's corpse Inside It, was tat^n from the local river. For months the Russian police were baffled. Tba mutilated body had been se*ed up In matting with several numbers on it. These an experienced railway of- flclal recognixed as the numbers used /on 4he Warsaw-Ylenna railway. The waybill waa turned bp an 1 showed that a package with those numbers had Wen sent to the con vent, but still It did not occur to any body to suppose the mouka were con-, nocted with the myaterious discov ery. The mystery might have re mained one forever but for a story told by a drunken cabman, who had ■ helped carry the apfa from the con vent. But the driver got drunk from the money procured from the monka' and told some companions of hla ad venture, which was duly communicat ed to the police. Father Damazy was arrested and he confessed that hla conscience was burdened with the robbery as well as the murder. He stated that for more than ten years the most riotous life had been led by the monks, who, while the faithful were praying In the church, used to squaunder the church's treasure In their orgies ami excesses.
