We are Indeed glad to chronicle tbe
home coming of Mr. and Mr*. Horace
Crouch who have dwelt awhile In
Greenville, Mr Crouch will engage In
mercantile business at Elko, and that
community should give him and his
dunning and accomplished better half
so good a welcome that they will never
again think or even dream of going
away.
The tax books are closed and under
positive instruction* from tbe Comp

year. While the larger taxpayers have
rendered their tribute many smaller
ones are behind time. About a tenth,

One of the happiest gatherings ever
held (n Great Cypress Township was
that of Friday evening at tbe hospi
tably home of Capt. W. M. Harden,
where fully a hundred of the best peo
ple in the world—county people—as
sembled. -
A delicious ovster supper, was served
which was the flrst attraction, but
the pleaauree of friends meeting
friends gave even greater and sweeter
enjoyment than tile dainties of the
generous feast wf good things.
Tho entertainment wa* given fiw the
benefit of 8l!oam Church, and the total
receipt* amounted to the nice sum of

The fair and good givers of this hap
py occasion nak us to return their best

nie Kline of Philadelphia. In 1384 he

a spirit of enterprise and energy that

Turning a part of his active atten
tion to the better development of fa
cilities for travel and transportation,
he became sole ownet of the line from
Barnwell to Blsckville, which develop

Midland, extending from Allendale to
Bateshurg. lie was also the pathfin
der for the building of the South Bound
Railroad from Columbia to SavAnnah,
and through him the Southern Kail

A few years ago he moved to Bruns
wick, Ga. because of the betrer busi
ness facilities of both rail and water
communication and there built up the
largest tie and timber business on the
Adantic Coast.
He was a man of big gene’rous heart,
of free and open hand. When misfor
tune or sorrow came toothers no friend
wa« readier than he In kind word and
liberal deed. He put sunshine Into
manv hearts and lightened the burdens
of PlaRy weary toilers, sore wounded

JUDGE BUCHANAN WOUNDED.
Monday afternoon on the train Irom
Columbia to Augusta Judge O. W.
Buchanan who was sealed reading by
a wiudow of the Pullman car. rose and
said to Judge Lyon sitting, with him
that he had been struck by a brick.
The train wa* stop
ped at Johnston, k physician called
and examination showed that a 22 call
bre bullet had entered Judge Buchan
an’* back above the left kidney. He
was carried on to Augusta and the
bullet extracted in Dr. Wright’s pri
vate sanitarium. The hall li*d enter
ed the Pullman window, pr< bablv shot
by thoughtless buys. There.is hope of
Judge Buchanan’* recovery.
