Let us say, then, “jo*t for the sake of argument,” that tiio church it losing its power. Thou why? There are probably several reason* that might be hunted upn>uUlbere.is one that is so apparent that It doe* not have tu be looked for—it thrusts itself upon one’s attention. It Is themumber of minis ters of tho gospel who hre-so ready to leave the pulpit for some other field of labor—uiinisteca, who arc the most conspicuous and most influential repre sentatives of the church on earth and who are divinely entrusted with iU care. What must be the Idea of an or dinary inan of the world when he sees a minister of the gospel, who has, ac cording to hi* own profession, been “called to preach,” and who has once said, with *t. Taul, “Woo U me if I preach not the gospel”—lay down the sacred office, descend from tiie pulpit and take up some other calling? It means to his mind (list the mlnistry and the church are not -eo important after all; that the ministry is simply a calling or profession, like law or teach-, ing or farming or merchandising or running a newspaper, and that the church Is only a respectable society for reasonably respectable am] moral per sons. Whilw there are thousands of devoted ministers who appreciate their sacred •calling and consider it their great privilege ami bounden duty to preach ibe gospel, there arc others—and the •^lumber is growing—wlio are ready to lay down tbeir sacred office to take up somethUig else, especially If there is more money in It Thera Is never a good paying church office to be tilled, but there are scores of candidates for it. One reason why the pulpit I* losing it* power Is that there i* tm* much of the spirit of commercialism in tho pul pit.
