The “yeggs” flourish In the southern and the western part of the state and in the country districts of all the other states, especially those in the south. The safe blowing and robbery by “yeggs” at Port Chester last week in dicates to those who know the habits of this queer class of criminals that a band is working this way. It is on the cards for them to be heard from soon in New Jersey or down on Long Island, although in the past the “yeggs” liave bothered Long Island very Httle. ——•—— The men whose business it is toknow all about criminals, their ways and the peculiar marks by which their work may lie told have liatl a hard time in stud) ing the ' yeggs.” One reason is that the “yeggs” are a com paratively new class, it is only with in ten rears that they have tiecome known In this regi<m. Some detect! ves profess to believe that the routes uf the “yeggs” are all mapped out for them before they take to the road. The date of each mid Is as carefully scheduled as a National league ball game, they believe. This may or may not be so. (>nly the “yeggs” can tell that, and “yeggs” Bike JJrflTN^nedlcIne without saying anything when arrested. Hundreds of “yeggs” live in the Bowery lodging houses In this city during the winter, it is thought. They prefer these places because they are safer there and are among com panions of the under world. They are well equipped with money and en joy life. They stand by one another, too, as is shown when a “yegg” is oc casionally arrested. Yesterdas morning about tt o’clock lie was asked to change from one room to another and did so: About noon a chambermaid opened the door of the, man’s room with a pass key in order to clean up the room. She noticed that Johnson was. very weak and gasping and ran for help. Officer Marsh was summoned, but by ^he time he reached the man he ceased to breathe, though he was still warm. Dr. Knowlton was called and pro nounced Johnson dead. An inquest was held last night, at which little developed, except that the supposition that the man’s name was Johnson had been established by the fact that a lady had heard Sheriff Bu- fordof Newbam^ddamyiimhry^ naffie.
