The practice of cow-penning laud Which is to be used for turnips is very common in the South, and is an excel lent moans of fertilization, and the treading and firming of the sandy soil is also an advantage. This ciop is a comparatively light user of nitrogen, and in fact on land which is rich in nitrogen, this element may well be omitted from the fertilizer, as too much of it will make the crop woody, and unfit for use, and alto tends to { (reduce tope, msteiul of roots. Turnip sceil are sown at a time in the South when the summer heat is most trying on seed gennination, and when hot sunahine is apt to follow close upon the heavy beating showers of the rainy season, and when insect life is moat plentiful and active. On account of these causes, the planter often fails to recure a good stand, and the failure is frequently laid to Ihe fault of Ihe seed, when more often than not the trouble ia due to some one of the cans- ee mentioned above. The “ turnip flea,’’a tiny insect, hardly large en ough to be seen, frequently destroys an entire planting of turnip before the plants have ap|>earcd above ground, and no trace is left to show what caus ed the failure of the seed to show above ground. This is one of the most common causes of failure in obtaining a stand of plants from summer sow Again, the young plants arc qiMntly destroyTgfiW towy' shown atrave ground by being scalded, the result of hot sunshine on the earth after a shower. Again,» hot dry spell, following the germination of th« Med is very apt to bake the starl ing plants, and to prevent a stand.' Ths writer of this article has known four bowings to be made from a pound m of turnip seed without obtaining stand, and at the end of the fourth planting, the planter was positive that the seed was ntterly worthless. He made a fifth sowing, however, and got a perfect stand, thus showing that the seed were all right, and that bis four failnree had been due to some unknown CMMk probably one or more of those already mentioned. ^ Considering the eeason at which this crop is sown in the South, and the usual climatic condi tions which prevail at the time of sowing, the planter must not think it strange if he does not obtain a perfect stand in every instance. Sow the seed in drills 20 to 2i in ches apart, covering the seed from 12 ^Jo-4-mch deep, and firming the soil. When the plants are well up, they abonld be thinned out from {> to 10 ln- chee apart, according to variety^Cultiv ate often enough to keep the ground in good mellow condition and free from weede. It often happens that moie turnips are raised than can be market ed to advantage when the crop is sold. By storing properly, they can be kept for a considerable time and used as wanled, x or held until the price .'has In the central South, a method ot storing is to pile in the field, after pulling them, being very careful not to break or cut off the roots, or U> bruise - or cut the tnrnips. Cover the piles with dirt, from 18 inches to 2 feet deep, to pre vent the tnrnips from freezing. When pihnf them In this wey, about an inch of top should be left on each oue. In scien tific, systematic, and economical feeding lies the profit in the poultry business,' whether We are feeding for meat or eggs. To produce a ration -that will carry a Mock through the year, and at the- siuallest.possible expense, requires considerable study. There are very few who know just a hat the lood con sumed by their flock has really cost, or what its nutritive value has been. A ration for laying bens should con tain a considerable variety of grains, grasses, and roots to tempt their ap petites, and should be rich in egg form ing properties, the nutritive ration be ing about one to four. This can be pro duced with cut clover, bran, corn meal and middlings for n morning mash and whole grain—corn, wheuT, buckwheat and as many more of the grains an can be oblamed—for the evening meal, with the addition of raw cut bone twice a week. At the prenenl prices of grain, and al lowing that roots cost l*i cents per bushel, a hen may be kept in confine ment on the above ration at a cost of altout 75 cents per jear. I have, by careful buying and judicial blending of the food products, kept hens satisfac torily at an average cost of about fifty- six cents cadi per year. I find buckwheat one of the liest whole-grain foods for hens. They never become cloyed on it, and it is a great cgg-producing gram. In ex|H.*ri- inents nuule in feeding during the |»ast winter, where the evening feed had l»eer. wholly of corn, I found that the substitution of buckwheat materially increased the egg yield. Kaffir corn, is a grain that should receive more at tention from poullrvuicn. While its nutritive valbe is shout the saipe as Indian corn, it is relished much lietlcr by fow Is and seems to produce more eggs. Where one raises his own grain I prefer to feed both buckwheat and Kaffir corn, uiithrashed, as working it out of the straw gives the hens exercise. Millet is highly recommended, amj where it can be produced cheaply, is an excellent addition to the list of grains. In these aitides, several theories have been advanced to account for the dissatisfaction w hich, it can not be denied, exists among Ihe young men on the farm. It seems to me that none of the theories fully meet the case. From my own observation, I am led to believe that the farmer is gener ally more to blame for this state of things, than his rtHu is. It U not so much ambition, on the part of the boy, to enter upon cityi life for the sake of Us advantages, as it is a .desire to es cape from Uie drudgery, of a life made unattractive and monotonous for him because it is a round ol labor from one week’s end to another -a life without variety, and one in which he plays the part ol a machine, to a great extent. It is a fact which cannot be denied that most farmers ignore the desire of their Iroys for variety, and seem to con sider them unequal to the task of as suming any responsibility. This is, no doubt, the.-.result of early traiuing. They are simply bringing up their boys as they were brought, and they excuse themselves for doing so by the foolish argument that what was. good enough for them is good^enough for their children. They can not be blind to the fact that the wot Id moves, and that the methods and practices of a generation ago can not be success!ujly applied to the present generation. I can never rid myself of the feeling, when I hear a man say this, that he feels sore over the hardiicHH r nnd narrowness of his own childhoisl and he experiences a desire to “get even” by making life as un pleasant for others as it bus been for binS. Perhaps I may lie doing the av erage farmer an injustice in thinking this, but I find so many who say that what was good enough for them is good enough for their boys, that I can not help believing that 1 am not far out of the way* The effort now .being made to or ganize the above named association should be met by hearty co-operation on the part of the farmers and their friends. The object oPthe association is a good one,'' No one can doubt for a moment the need of some action to help cotton growera to - get more for their cotton. What may be the best possible way to secure this is a matter of some doubt and oficn to discussion. Hut the best way to discuss it will be in an organized capacity. Get in the organization and then throw all the light you can upon this great question. There will be need for the very best; brains among us. Designing men will be ready, as they ever have been, io seek their own''advantage at our ex pense. This they have already been doing. Hut this only makes it the more necessary that we should J thoroughly organize and then keep wide awake against all such plans. The twenty-four by fifty-four men and the round bale men are each try- ing to get in the saddle for their own respective interests. I^t them go ahead on their several plans to give us a round bale, but we need not commit ourselves to either. The warehouse interests will press plans for combiner bonded ware house handling of cotton. This would only be tying our hands with an ad ditional cord. We need better bales, and we need better warehouses, but we do not need any trust combinations to run these. Each community can have a bcltjr warehouse and each ginnery can turn out a better bale.* We should be very careful along here. >< ' ✓ The hankers are courting the favor of the farmers very assiduously just now. And it is well they should. We lay the golden eggs; but they generally manage to get .them. Without any frictioa-or faction, the farmers need to come together and consult their in terests along here. Now is. the time when your» home-made accumulation .jof manure wastes faster in the stables and barnyard than at any other time of the year. It dries up and firefangs worse by far than at any other season, and no matter whether it is kept under shelter or is fully exposed, it wilt be losing value if not cared for. The general UHHiiumendation is to use pias ter as an absorbent, and this is all right if there is not too much dryness already in the manure. The plaster is not going to cheek the (light of ammo nia unless it is dampened, and can bring about chemical changes, for dry plaster is no-better than *dry dust of 'any kind. The best plan is to get the manure out on the grass stubble as fast as made. Hut in many cases this' is not practicable in the busy summer time, and the next best thing is to see that the manure Joses no more than can he helped. The best plan we have ever tried is to mix kaimt and plaster and give every part of the manure a good sprinkling as it is thrown out of the stable. Tbeu-if U is to remain in the yard any time put it in fiat piles and on each layer, as put up, sprinkle more of the plaster .and kaiuit. The salt in the kaiuit lias a strong aflinity for moisture and will not only/tend to keep the mauure moister and give the plaster a better chance, but it will be adding what the manure lacks most— potash. Then when (hat manure is hauiei) out on the grass stubble, where it should go as soon as possible, you have a dressing that wiH do far more good than ordinary manure, for the plaster and kaimt will also have tend ed largely to the retention of the am monia in a non-volatile form. All the mowing lands should have a dressing as soon a‘s possible "after, bay harvest, and no matter hww large the accumula tion of home-made manure may be, it is seldom sutlicieut to go over the whole. Then the judicious use of fer tilizer mixtures come into play, and it will pay you to use them. The best dressing we Jiavecvcr used ou grass lands is a mixture of nitrate of sod i, raw hone meal and muriate of |H>la»di. Of cuurac* dim phosphoric acid, in the bones is not as immediately available as that in a dissolved super phosphate, but it comes into play much sooner than other forms :of "the so- called insoluble phosphoric acid, as the bone meal decays rapidly, and the plants are fed more continuously and gradually than with the dissolved {rho*- [►hate.
