HOME, SWEET HOME. Editoh Peoplk x : , ' , 1 have been at home for several days sick, under care of doctor, and alto of my dear wife, and children and rumi nating in my mind—j^have decided tt> let the boys jtnow what I think of home—that no more pathetic, truer and sweeter words could have been written than when the sweet aoul in spiration took possession of John How ard Payne, and he penned the words of Home, Sweet Home. Just listen awhile ye strangers at home—those who make it a point to be from home so often, and hear* what that good man says—sec bow truthfully and pathetically he puts it: ’Mid pleasures and palace*, though we may roam, Be it ever so humble—there’s no place like home; A charm from the sky seems to -hal low us there, Which Seek through the world is ne’er^j met with elsewhere;' • Home, home, sweet, sweet home, There is no place like home I An exile from home, splendor daz zles in vain, , O give me my lowly thatched cottagF again; Tlie birds singing gay\y that came at my call, Give me them and the peace of mind— dearer than all; Home, home, sweet, sweet home. There Is no place like home! , Read it, boys, and see if it fits your case—If so, come home. boys, and own up*like men; do better, be better men and box* -and get better acquainted with yourselves and your home and your family. Somerville, who was a good man and a gifted writer, took up the inspiration and heaFwhat he says: in the spring of 1863 two great armies were encamped on either side of the Rappahannock River—one dressed in blue, the other in gray. As twilight fell the bands on the Union aide began to play the ‘‘Star Spangled Banner,” and “Rally Round the Flag.” The challenge was taken up by those oil the other aide In gray, and they responded with the “Bonnie Blue Flag,” and “Away Down South in Dixie.” It was borne upon the soul of a single sol dier In one ol those hands of milsic to begin a sweeter, tenderer air, and slow ly as he played, all the instruments up on the Union side joined in, until fi nally a great anti mighty chorus swell ed up and down the army—“Uome- Sweef Home.” He said that when they had finished there was no challenge yonder, for ev ery band upon that further shore had taken up that lovely air, and one cho rus of the two great armies went up to God—“Home Sweet Home.” - And well they sung, each heart was HI led with joy. From first In tank to the little drum- fflcrbrty; •' 'Then loud huzzas, and w ildest cheers were given, - Which seemed to cleave the air and reach to Heaven. East Side, S. C., June lOih, 1899. J. B.
