The Wilmington Messenger of a re cent date gives a description of one day’s movement of strawberries along the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Three solid trains with eighty-six of the refrigerator cars of the California Fruit Transportation Company were loaded with the red ripe berries along the W. A W. R. R., between Wilming ton and Mt. Olive. They contained 000 crates. In addition several thousand crates were shipped by ex press, making the total of the day’s movement 35,000 crates, containing over a million quarts and worth more than $100,000. Over a hundred drum mers from Northern houses were along • the road buying berries. And the stretch of country where these Helds are full of money was thought a few years ago to be almost worthless and made only to hold the rest of the world together. GIVE HIM A DAY’S WORK. Gen. Wade Hampton published a card last week telling the people of the State to stop subscribing money to re build ids lately burned house, and sta ting that be could not accept such help although he gratefully appreciated their good will. Many are not w illing to accept his refusal and are looking for a way to get around it. In tins county pcQplQjiavc a mighty good way of helping a burned out neighbor by giving him a day’* work. Some of these days a panic will come along that will bunt the bubbles with which Wall Street operators hare been playing. Grand Chancellor Goldsmith, of Greenville, presiding An address of welcome on behalf of tiie city was made by Mayor Malloy, to which Past Grand Chancellor Charles Carroll Simms responded. For tiie lo cal lodge, U- C. Matthew s extended tiie welcome of hands, hearts and homes and Dr. Thornwell replied, for the Grand Lodge. At first roll call 51 lodges answered,, represented hy some 150 delegates. The Grand Lodge Rank was conferred upon about 50 new members. The Grand Lodge was instituted In this State in 1880. The order now lias 84 subordinate lodges with a total mem bership of 47,070, embracing many of the best men in tiie State. The sum of $35,000 is In the treasury of these subordinate lodges for'relief of the poor and sick ami the burial Of tiie dead. Not a dollar of that sum can he spent for any other purpose. The Grand Lodge of the State has $7,000 in its treasury and does not owe a dollar.
