Lovei Life.
Jam*** S. Sander*, colored, sentenced
at the U*t term of Court to be hanged
on January 3rd, has been chained to
the floor of hi* cell for safe keeping
since the death sentence wa* psaaed.
Last Wednesday morning he picked
hi* shackles loose with a piece of wire
whicn he had secured by some unex
plained mean*. He next pulled otf the
stout door facing and wrapping hi*
blanket around that to deaden the uolse
he prized the gate door to his cell *o that
he squeezed hi* body out into the pas
sage. s»H« we«t up to the garret
through the scaffold opening taking
the hangman'* ro|»e, partially unravel
ling it. Going through the scuttle
opening he reached the roof, but being
discovered before he could arrange to
•wing down by the rope be weat to the
eave ami leaped off, over the porch to
the ground, a jump of 27 perpendicular
feet. Tne fall stunned him for a little
while, hut a* Jailor McLemore ran up
to seize him Sanders recovered, rose
and grasped an axe to kill Mr. MuLe-
more. He was overpowered and pul
hack in jail and hi* hurts from his fall
cared for. He was pretty badly in
jured but is recovering and out Of

Rev. Noland preached his last ser
mon on Sunday at 11 oclock in the M
E. Church to a very large audience.
His sermon wa* a very fine one suitable
to the occasion. He has been assigned
to lAourdiu's in the Florence District.

entertainment on Wednesday -night.
The school will have two weeks for the
holiday* ami will open on January 2nd.
The program is the best they have
ever had. Miss Girardeau, the music
teacher, has been very busy in select
ing a most interesting program.

Manufactories is the great need of the
South. There is no reason why our
cotton should besom North to he man
ufactured. We saw in one of our stores
a few days since several case* of to
matoes put up by W. s. Mims at
.Whaley on the C. M. Rail Road. One
or two Canning factories ought to be
established at every town. Fruit evap
orators would pay to dry fruit of all
kinds for home consumption,

leston, returned home a few days since
after spending some time with Misses
Harley and capturing the hearts of
manv of our young men.

At high noeto Wednesday, December
11th, Doctor Belton Rhett Boylston,
one of Barnwell county’s most-substan
tial sons, was united in holy wedlock to
Miss Eulalia Mims, one of her most
lovable daughters. Shortly before the
hour appointed the relatives and friends
began to gather at Hattleola, the resi
dence of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Mims, pa
rents of thei bride. The parlor, halls
ard dining room were most tastefully
decorated with flowers and evergreens.
As the last notes of Mendelsohn 7 * wed
ding march died away the bride came
into the parlor leaning trustingly on
the arm of the groom and the ceremo
ny, beautiful, solemn and impressive
was performed by the Rev, W. D. Me-
Millan. Soon afterwards all were in
vited to the dining room, where the ta
bles loaded with flowers and the good
t;hlngs that t^npt and please the palate,
the beauties of which defies descrip
tion. The bride was beautifully at
tiled In a silver gray ‘suit, with trim
mings of tan silk, cream )aoe and fish
scale passementerie. The presents were
all handsome and serviceable. Towards
evening they bide good bye to ail and
left for the home of the groom’s pa
rents amidst good wishes of every one.
A meeting of the subscribers to the
capital stock of the South Carolina and
Arugiuta Railroad Company will be
held la Charleston onmext Tuesday for
the purpose of organizing the said
Company, and electing a President and
Directors.

She Was a member of Rosemary
Church for about 36years and she leveil
her church and Ita members; she kept
the faith, she fought a good fight. She
waa a loving wife, a pious khd tender
mother; the mother of eight children,
three of whom were blind. This caused
her a great deal of grief and trouble;
but she never fretted ovdf her troubles,
she bore her cares without a murmur.

Kearse, Frank Brant, P. H. Hiers, Jake
Folk aud Frank Htanley, charged with
the murder of the Kearses at Broxton's
Bridge, on the night of December 2,
surrendered themselves to bheriff Black
this morning, and are now in jail.
They have employed Col. Robert 41-•
drlch, Messrs. Howell A Gruber, and
Messrs. Griffin A Padgett to represent
them.
Allendale had a disastrous fir* on last
Friday morning. It started about 3
o’clock in Mr. W. V. Gill’s two story
building, occupied by R Bcharfsin aud
VV. E. Harter, merchants. Opinions
differs* to its origin. Some think it
was caused by a rat and matches in Mr.
Harter’s store, while others believe it
caught from a restaurant. The fire
burned slowly and the people worked
heroically in saving tho effects of the
occupants of the buildings. The losses
are estimated as follows: Port Royal
and Augusta Depot, 12,600, amount of
Insurance unknown: R. Scharfsln,
clothing and dress goods, $1,700 no in
surance: W. K Harter, general mer-
cbandls!, $2,060, no insurance: W. V.
Gill, Stores and Hall, $1,500, Insured
in Lloyd’s in F. H. Creech’s agency:
T. -D. Johnson, building $800, 119 in
surance: Capt. Leroy Wilson, hotel,
$2,600, no Insurance, but furniture and
ail contents saved; Dishsr A Pickrum
building, value not stated.
But the Allendale people are plucky
ard will not sit down in the ashes.
Better and safer buildings will take the
places of those ijestroyed. All the suf
ferers hare the sympathy of the public
especially Capt. Wilson and family for
the loss of their comfortable home. '
