The nice four room cottage of M r. S.
F. Boyles was burned Saturday mori£
ing. The tire caught above the ceiling
from the stove ptpe, while breakfiftt was
being prepared, and made such head
way before discovered that it could not
be checked. People responded quickly
and saved all the furniture, Ac. The
house cost |S(J0 in money, Mr. Bo vie*
having built it himself, out of carefully
selected material. He had flJttn insu
rance, which will go to the Building
and l/oan Association, and clear the lot
of incumbrance People, white and
black, worked bravely to save surround
ing buildings. Everybody is sorry for
Mr. Hoyles, and he Is receiving sub
stantial sympathy in contributions of
money and building material.

.the gathering at Rivers’ Bridges on
Memorial Day, and the hospRallty of

equal to the occasion. Indeed the only
complaint wade was that the guest# of

sume the good things so lavishly pro
vided for their entertainment.
Delicious as were the crcptuye com
forts even pore enjoyable were the ad
mirable speeches of Revs John U. Wil-
lism*. J. U. Wilson, P.V. Kistier, J. W.
Elkins, an i laymen W. F. Gouge, B. P.
Guttino. F. II. Creech, C. U. Fdlaev,
Dr. Khh and G. wr. Goolsby. Every
speaker did himself credit and no man
or woman can s*y that Barnwell
County lacks orators so long as these
silver tongues ring out true for so goml
a cause.
And the music! Some described It
aa splendid other* as *ti|torh. Both
were right aa far as they went, but
neither went far suougli. In training,
sweetnesa and volume It was simply
perfect, and in itself amply repaid all
visitors for the fatigue of their rides to
the beautiful church. The church was
beautifully decorated with fair Bowers,
and all, visitors aud hosts, separated
with genuine regret. Perhaps the bap-
piest person In all that great meeting
was Mr. Conrad Khrhardt, whose goml
heart Is so thoroughly enlisted la the

at Cumon’s Bridge ou Saturday.

success, much enjoyed by all partici
pant*. Mis* Groves will take her de
parture for Blackvllie in a few days,

Cannon’s Bridge Is nearing comple
tion. Mr. A. J. Kittrcll, who has
taken the contract, is shoving the work
very rapidly and in a few days it is
ho|ied flint, the bridge will he in first
class condition. Heretofore it was a
dilapidated affair.

young people than those who gathered
on the banks of the broad Savannah to
participate in a, picnic on Iasi Friday,
the 27th Apri', given by two of Martin’s
most gallant beaux, Messrs. M. J. John
son and J. C. Oswald, chaperoned by
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Oswald, Sr., and the
j >*:al Capt. W. A. .Martin. The day
was just perfect ; the sun shone ever so
bright and the water w as rippled by the
faintest flower-laden breeze. Danqlng
was indulged in through the day to the
enchanting strains of a violin in a com
modious warehouse cleared for the pur
pose. At 2 o’clock dinner was an
nounced under the broad brapclies of
the spreading magnolia. It was a sump
tuous repast snd partaken of with good
appetites sharpened by the river breeze.
The luscious strawberries from Rich
mond llilf made an enjoyable dessert.
During the afternoon a walk to Boiling
Spring was enjoyed ar.d a cool cup of
water was partaken of. By the way—
a word about this spring, which, thro'
Its mineral qualities is fast becoming
famous. It has recently been purchased
bv Mr. W. V. Gill of Allendale, who
leaving the grounds around beauti
fully laid off amrlhe spring inclosed by
an iron tank, w hich will raise the water
several feet, above ths earth. He will
also erect a neat four-room cottage In
the ground*. _
The steamer Ethel was punctual and
formed an object of interest. As soon
as she landed she was boarded by sev
eral couples of young ladle* and gen
tlemen who took possession of her sa
loon. When the whistle sontided for
departure, one of the party, a ’timid (1*)
gentleman,” was so dismayed at the
idea of being taken down the river tliat
be rushed headlong down th* stairway,
quite forgetting the “fair one” under
his charge; however, the genial Cap
tain Carroll kindly waited until tin. 1 par
ty were sifely on terra Brma. We w ill
close, hoping that invitation* will soon
lie out for another picnic under the aua-
piceiof Messrs Johnson and Oswald.

surplus of these, articles for hale. No

amount received before the agitation in
favor of diversified crops began, are ob
tainable, but there is no d6ubt that the
lalling off has been immense. ,
And the farmer* am m-m* prosperous
since they began racing corn and hog*.
If there has been no decrease in the
cotton acreage, then the cultivated area
ha* been greatly Increased. While it is
true that the cultivated area haa been
increased somewhat, nevertheless that
increase does not account for ihe large
acreage now devoted to food crops.
The conclusion is inevitable that there
are nut as many acres planted in cotton
as there were a few years ago,
It may be tliat owing to a liberal use
of fertilizers the yield |H*r acre Is larger
than formerly, and lienee, while the
acreage has been reduced there ha*
been no reduction in the total yield.

now promise* to exceed the estimate*
considerably, though It is doubtful if
there would not have Iteeu a demand
for it at a good price if business condi
tions in this countrjyand Europe had
been normal during the last year,
Cotton always commands cash and
that U the main reason it is such a fa
vorite crop w ith planters, and although
they may not have received the cost < f
production this y*pir they always enter
tain the hope that prices w ill be bettc-
next year. There is another thing to
betaken Into consideration. It is that
only in a 1 few part* of the cotton states
can grain aud meat lie produced at a cost
that wbuld enable the producers to send
itto distant markets and sell ft in com
petition with similar product* of the
wqst. After the home market is sup
plied they could not dispose of their
surplus at prices that would yield them
as gnml a net return as cotton. There
fore, they arc practically forced to
