A right aquare up “pay as yon go” busloesa alight suit nn old bachelor like Paul, but it clout .suit ns. This is an age of credit. Kven the national government Is in debt millions of dollars, and so are the states and counties ami most of the churche*. Hanks arc chartered to lend money, and everybody is invited to come and borrow. With aUTthese ex amples before us the people have got in a way of going in debt and they can't get out of it. It Is said that the nation owes more than it is worth and is really bankrupt, but that can't bo so. There are lots of folka who owe about as much as they own, l*nt aa long ns they pay the interest it don't matter. In terest is of more importance than the principal to n money lender. A laind for thirty years is worth more than one for ten years. Debt is a hard master, but afemthyi kind friend nnd there la lots of fun in catching up.- I’ve Ixuni trying to catch up . ever since the war but almost everybody is about a year behind and they f.tay so. With, the average family man it is almor.l Impos sible to catch up, and so he gvta used to the credit system anil gencnlTly"dtm with a debt on his estate. That's what lathe matter with politics right now. The late panic Interrupted the credit system and the people are mad about it. The want to borrow more money and they talk about JftO “per capita" just like the government or Homebody owed •very man, woman and child that much and wouldn't pay it. There is some good in every misfortune, and 1 know that the panic has had some good re- rcaults. It has put the brakes on the train of extravagance. The way to get out of debt is to buy nothing that you are not obliged to have, and we are doing it at my house—not willingly at all, but when the merchants sell for coah only and we havent got the cash that stops the train —even such folkf have had to slow up for town lots and bonds are not cash. Merchants are not selling aa many luxuries us they did s year ago. A jeweler told me he was not selling one third as mooh. It is curious how a man will unconsciously graduate his debts. If he can't pay :i>i and has a little money and wants to dc right, he will pay the butcher and his grocery merchant in preference tathc dry goods merchant. Food Is mo*im portant than clothing. You can patch up last year's garments, but victuals must come fresh every day. Food and fire come first and have the fiyst lien on u slim purse. And the gas bill and •water bill has to be buhl by town folks or these comforts will bo ent off. They ■Belong to corporations and corporations have no souls. Servant's hire ranks pretty high, especially the cook and wash woman. They are always paid. A man is ashamed for his cook to think he has no money. Her respect for Him is based upon the idea Ihiit. h* 1 i** n fT cn : tleman and doesnt belong to ti»e “poor white trash," us the negroes cull •hem. . tki to kcep up the delusion he al.\ynj ' pays the colored servants. Hut aftci - tbese-cumcaJlie JWy goo^s men and they get a slice now and then iihd trike a note for the balance. Lately they, got to drawing on you and they write yon a love letter, asking you tc protect the draft. Or they send you a statement of your account about twice a month ami say “i’lease remit." That is all right, and it is business, but If a man hasn't got the money he can't protect the draft, nor remit cither. The draft wasn’t in any particular dan ger nohow, and as the protection was for revenue only, it goes back dishon ored. I paid a little bill the other day to an old friend, and when I remember that 1 hoped we would now have a more limited correspondence, he r.nid be didn't know anything about it—that be supposed hit bookkeeper was the .‘guilty party. Ho hereafter I shall .pay less attention to those billydoos froir. 'bookkeeper*. Hut last of all^ comes the preachei r.nd the doctor. I am sorry for them. 1 The lawyer can take care of himself but the doctor seems like one of the \i family, and he will wait and wait be fore he sends in his hill, and then wail again before any necions attention i- paid to it. The family think too ranch «>f him to treat him 'like lie was a cred- itor. and he thinks t'xj much of the mb' importune. It is such an affectionate confidential relation that it must not la- disturbed by a little ,matter of money, and so. in the meantime, the p»a>r fam ily doctor is in dunevr of perishing to death. 1 paid one the other day a little bill of eleven dollars that was tv o years old. find his surprise a'tit gratitude wcie distressing. Hut the preacher is the most helpless of all ige.liUtrs, lie can't make out any bills nor send any dum. He has to deal with a corporation, anil church corporations are pretty mneb like nlI~oHiersl XoTine Individual ne- knowledge* the debt. If he acknowl edges his part«he -is doing pretty well. The officers meet once a year and fix. the salary, and another set of officer* call around once a month and ask for the money, but they do, not get more Ilian half of it The good, humble preacher goes to th« treasurer occasion- ally And timidly asks if there is any money on hand tor him. He gets about half Us due* and thauks the Lord in his heart and invokes a blessing upon hi* people. I wonder if there is a town caurch in nil the land that keeps right •qaaic up with the pr.-adier. Onetime j was present wiU* th< officers when the preacher ventui c«i to tell them that Vtny tand* emb-i rassed, Ahat Jected. saying that ho couldn't afford to lose any more than he was losing. Hot I forgot to mention tax*-1 taxes that are as hioxnruble and unfeeling ns jdcath. 1 Nothing is certain in this world Tmt dcnTTTritffiToYesT T rcmrmbrrwhcn (he nib' of, taxation on land was only ten cents «*B a hundred dollars, but now it is one hundred cents. They m cm to pvt higher and higher as the years roll on. I don't know where the blame is. May lie it can't lie helped, for there it th« lunatic asylum that costs nearly fNKl.ooo n year, and there ars other charities and expenses we did not have in the days of aultl lang syne. Then there are these everlasting courts that never end. and their oust is immense midgets immenscr every year. What is to become of these negroes, anyhow 1 Here is the last report of Captain Jones, which wiy*: that during the Inst year, from Octolier to October, he has received 71S convicts all colored. This is nearly twice as many as for the year preced ing. The report for ISO? was 10G whites all -told In the convict camps. Now there an* only 1M whites. There an- now.-Jd.Sim. negroes 01 percent of all the convicts. The in crease of,colored convicts averages 15 per cent a year, That rate will, take only six and oDe-hq,lf, years to bring the number np to 4.000. When will thi* alarming condition stop, and what will stop it ? Our jail la full all the year round nnd so arc most of the jails in the state, and it takes time and money to try them and feed them. Of course we want a reformatory, and we want It very badly, but it will take one of mara- negroes who will lie sent there. That college will matriculate five hundred the first year, nnd it will take lots of money nnd more taxes to keep it up. Hut we won’t worry about, future trou bles. It Is well enough though to fore see them and prepare f'lr them. It looks like we will need a tariff for rev enue and protection? too, liefofe we get through with the negro. Hill Aki*. THE MILOMETER. During the timc'oT’tKe perUiilicaT lTi- nndation of the valley of the Nile a queer recording' instrument, known as the "nllometer," Is hourly and daily consulted by a sluggish Egyptian offi cer, who, to judge from" his motions and actions, cares but very little If the river keeps its bed or overflows the whole northern half of the African continent. Hut, as it is the only labor ho is forced to perform, and as his bread and cheese usually depend upon proper execution of the duties assigned, the record Is taken with scrupulous accu racy. This queer and ancient “ther mometer of the Nile" (tt dates back to 845 A. D.) Is situated at tho end of the Island of Ilhoda. It is simply an im mense upright octagonal pillar stand ing in a wcll-Hke chamber, surrounded on four sides with strong wall* pro vided with arched openings which al low the rising waters free access to the nilometcr The recording pillar Is covered throughout its length and on all of its eight sides with cubits nnd digits nicely divided, paintol with great precision, much resembling sec tions 'of a gigantic checkerboard.
