He died as soon as the moon rose, and the oldest of his slaves were hi* pallbeareia. Wbea then not one of the men wlioiii h* addressed that night has left the service of his widow, and at the eloseof the civil strife, when negroes were hastening to seek work in towns and cities, the Pickens plantation almost alone re niained intact. It is almost the only plantation where the laborer is paid a bvm s in addition to his salary, accord ing to the season or success of the cron. As re lated by a prominent South Carolina lady who was an eye witness of the services, it w as a memorable scene. Her pallbearers were the ex-slaves of h *r father, some of w hom had borne him to his grave over a score of years ago. The spectacle was striking In it antithesis. Thecoltin was white velvet ( rofusely covered w ith white flowers, and around it in the palatial ball room of the homestead were grouped thw white-haired negroes. The see c was impressive enough in fteelf, but was almost, star ling in its solemnity when Mrs. Pickens, the courtly, beautiful mo hi r, stepped to the head of the casket and facing her f»lthtul’S''rvants addr ssed them : “I have sent for you to do you this honor, because,” and here there was a break in the voice, "1 wish to make a public acknowledgment of your faith fulness and devotion, through all her sweet life, to tliis your young mistress. Yon have been faithful to that trust, in all the dreadful limes of riot and thieving you have stood by us and \ rotected ns. and 1 thank you now in - the pres ence of all these friends for your loy- aitand devption. That sweet young lire is now dver, and you will carry from this room her precious body. Her spirit is with Hod, she.is now an ange! ^tnTieavan, and I now ask you to con tinue your faithful devotion and pro- tect'on to y ur desolate mistress and to these IJttle children of your young mistress, w hom she loved better than her life.’* It was a strange sight, this lit'le speech and appeal of a mistress to her ex-slaves at the casket of tier daughter. The slaves (keeping and awed, bore their young iniktrers to the family burial ground and laid her by the side of herjather, wh"in they had burl**d 30ye ra*before.
