Consequently the reduction of city noise is now ono of the most important elements in all city re-, n. forms. ■* - — In New York we have nn yet only iimde a beginning on it by tho introduc tion of the asphalt pavement, but this is being rapidly extended and must pro duce a marked effect in sound deduction before long. What this pavement does to lessen noise in tho streets in which it exists everybody who has passed alohg thym or lived bn them knows. It makes - conversation in cabs or carriages and jn rooms facing on the street comfortable mid makes sleep in summer nights with oiien windows an easy possibility—facts which uro really a complete answer to all the complaints of alipiierinesa. Better far that an occasional horse should come down than that tho nerves thousands of hardworking men and women should lie continuously set on edge by clatter which is all the more wearing for being intermittent.
