WTe all know how ranch greater j 8 the *eed of children for sleep than of grown persons, and how necessary for their good it is to-be able fully to satisfy this need, but how great it is generally at . any particular age of the child is very hard to define exactly. The amount varies under different climatic condi tions. In Harden we consider a sleep of eleven or tvrtlve hours necessary for the younger school children and of at least eight or nine hours for the older ones. Yet the invivtigntions have shown that this requirement lacks much of ls*ing met in all the Ahsm through the whole school. Boy* in the higher classes get but littld more than seven hours in l*»d, and as that is the average it is -easy to perceive that many of them must eun- tent themselves with still Ics* sleep. It is also evident from the investiga tions that the sleeping time i* dirainiah<*d with the Increase of tlie working hmini from clam to class, so that puftls of the same ago enjoy less according ns they are higher in their classes. It thus ap pear* constantly that in schools of rela- Hrely longer b»*imof work the Klevping time of the pupils is c<irrespi»ndingly shorter. In short, the prolotigation of the working iioun takes phwe tor the most part at the c<»t of the time for sleep. —— Professor Axel Key in Popular Science. • ab*-r llolh |><M*r*.
