A little way out in the water, in front of the diring board, was n ladder lying on the iea, and in front of this ladder wont two trestle*.. Between these two trestles, the ice was broken away, leaving a space of water to dive into about ten feet long by fire or six wide, the trestles being placed there for the purpose of j keeping the miserable little plunge bath select from the skater*.' To the left of the trestles was another ladder lying on the ice. Near the bank I found a policeman who was communi cative. Tho bathers form a kind of club, and number about twenty, he told me., They bathe every morning. No matter- what the weather is, in they go just the same. All classes of people belong to tbe club, I was further told, and some came from a good distance. One tu thusiaet is 78 years old. His hair and beard are wliite as snow. Just behind us was a very fine old elm tree. “That,” said the policeman, “is their favorite tree. That is where they dress and undress.” I soon found that this was the case, as th^ bathers came upi The first roan to arrive lost no time in undressing, but went to the tree and threw off his clothes, chatting to tho po liceman the while. Then he sped gayly to his little patch of water between the trestles. Into tho water be jumped— it is very shallow here—and dipping underneath it Ix'gan to throw.out some very large blocks of ice to the right and left of him. This done, be leaped nimbi j- on to the diving board, poised himself, plunged and disappeared beneath the water, but only for a few moments, lit? Was out again in that space of time and ran nim bly to the tree, where he quickly dried himself and rather shyly dressed. The others also undressed quickly, inounl- the board and divinl, hut only once, they were out like the rother mau and rapidly drying themselves. They never take more than one plunge in the cold weather.
