One hundred thousand running feet of
palmetto logs will be stripped right away
from Brunswick to Santiago, Cuba. This
is a new article of export from this state,
and bids fair to become an important
factor iu increasing Brunswick's already
enormous Umber and lumber trade.
Mr. W. F. C'arnegie, the millionaire
iron man, is largely interested in on iron
mine near Santiago, and the ordur was
made by his company, A great part of
the timber is to bo used in tho conatruc-
kou of cribs to inclose a harbor no&r the
mines in which fhips can load. The rest
will be converted into pilw for building
u railroad acru«s quite a large body of
water.
A gentleman well informed in
matters said that this material would
last an indefinite lengtlTDf time under
water, but could ffot very well stand ex
posure to tho air. It is almost proof
against the attack of worms, and is en
tirely free from barnacles. Aud while
it will no doubt finally succumb to these
two destroying agencies, yet there can
be no doubt of its lasting at least twice
as lung under water as any other kind of
