Ilsviundeter mined just how many basic colors en ter into the picture, the artist com mences hi* work by preparing a litho graphic stone for each separate color; The artist commences his work hr making a delipato ami elaborate ink tracing of the picture; not oftly its E moral outlines, but tho minute and tficate touches and shades of color if which it is comi>o3od. The tracing Cr is chemically prepared, so that tno lines U}>on it cun be readily trails ferretf to stone. A pi*essjs employed to transfer the impressions on the paper to tho stone, considerable pres sure being used. Thousands of im- ' pressions'can then be taken from the .vatone by simply running an ink roller 1 over it. The tracing thus transformed forms what is known as the keystone. Sup pose there are twenty colors in the ehroftio. This number of im^wessioiis is taken from the key stone arid ca/* t -- WefitHy* dusted witlr red* Tfilftk; dim offset of tho entire tracing is then pressed on each one of these stones^ The drawing then begins, and often occupies many months. Each stone is -to be printed in a sepsTrato color, and therefore must contain not only all tliat is necessary of that color of tho icture, to the minutest detail, but ail fiio compound colors, made by printing one-or more over others. A variety of gradations of cidor from its full strength to the faintest tinting , stat can be produced on the stone, junt as I jj oinH Practical Watchmaker. Tneao various col- •rs are, of course, worked up iu black ny-thc artist, and it is tho printer who applies the colors. The lines on each flepdrate stone " are itched w ith the wash of nitric acid and gum arable, and are ready for the presses. Tim printer must be as skillful as the artist in applying his colors, and must fully realize the bUmdingandef-- fect of each color. As fast jus each color U printed it is submitted to the artist, who has thus a progressive proof of the work. It has been probably noticed that. Jines cross each other on tho margin of the cliruma Tkcso-aru tlmsa termg marks, and enable tho printer to )daco tho sheet in the same relative po sition every time a new atone is used and a new color applied. These lines are drawn iu the-origiual tracing and appear on each stone. When the tirst color is printed very small holes arc punctured in each sheet ut the intersection of these lines, verv tine holes are alsodrilled iu eorespona- iug positions on each of tho subse quent stones, and the boles in the pa per ore to correspond precisely with the holes in the stone, and thus as each additional color is put on a perfect reg- . ister is secured and each color falls just whcro.it belongs. Tlie next process is to make tho ahroino have a rough surface like an oil pointing. A stone is now prepared which has a rough surface, similar to canvas. * Tlie chromo is then laid upon it and passed through a press 'With heavy pressure. When it comes forth it is ftn exact imitation of tho painting. It is then varnished, and thus you have tho chromo ready for the market. Tho world is yet practically depend ent on one quarry in Uavaria for its lithographic stone, fttonea have been found in France, England, Canada and tlie United Btatcs, but none pos sess tho qualities of the best German 6tones, A bed of lithographic stoua has been found in Sequatchie Valley, ] not far from Chattanooga, and the in. vestigatious so far indicate that it will yield stone of a very tine Quality. If it should prove so, it will be literally a gold mine. Tlie liner quality of stone is today worth thirteen cents per pound and is very scarce.—Nashville 111—! -Namely.
